I've seen rattlers at El Moro (East Ridge) on several occasions as well as Aliso (Mathis, West Ridge, Meadow and Cholla) and Whiting (Mustard). I have been able to get them to turn and head back into the bushes by stomping my feet (from a safe distance, of course). If they are stretched out and you're going fast, bunny hop them - just don't be the second or third guy in the group. Sorry to hear about your dog - that sucks!

I always take my snake on the trail. Dont worry, it only bites on the sick, weak and opportunistic. OOPS did I just type that?#-o

Thats a nice southern pacific,

rattlesnakes for the most part can strike 1/3 to 1/2 there body length

40% of bites are dry (venomless bites)

They Cant really jump, unless they are up high and fall, they are relatively weak bodied and thats why they have potent venom

They are a very important part of the ecosystem, i would personally take a room full of rattlesnakes vs a room full of rodents with haunta virus or the plague

Have seen rattle snakes on the Turnball canyon trail in the summer. Some snakes in Brea/Carbon Canyon. Last summer we watch a snake, I don't know what kind it was but, it grabed a small rodent! Was kind of weird to watch but like an accident or scary movie you just have to watch it!

I see them occasionally. A rather large what looked like a gopher/king snake on Coyote at Aliso and a much larger rattler near Fenceline at El Moro-- the rattler was a magnificent creature--had to be around 4-5 feet and the color of caramel with a very cool off white pattern-- the tail was black. Any idea what kind of viper this is anyone? Scared the cr** outta me. He looked at me like, "I ain't movin' until I'm ready-- so wait." I did. But imagine the ones you DON'T see lurking in the bushes!

I had one strike at me coming down Black Star, My buddie in front of me must have scared it when he rode by it, he slowed down and stopped to warn me but he was too late, he saw it go after me just missing my back wheel. I didn't even see it but I heard something.
Also another time at Vail Lake(pictured) I came around a corner of single track and there it was right across the trail, I stop about 5 feet in front of it. It was just begining to eat some kind of rodent. Both of them rattlerz. One more time I saw two big fat ones at the same time at the top of Mustard.

Whiting: something that resembles a mountain lion...not sure what it was and didn't want to find out.

I was there last Friday too, but didn't see the snake on Cholla. I did see a few mtb'ers riding solo. Maybe it was you??

I saw a baby mountain king on the bottom of WHT, a cal king in the Talbert Marsh and numerous rattlers and unknowns at most of the parks around here. About 3 years ago I swear I must've seen no less than two dozen rattlers in EM alone during the summer but since then only a handful altogether in all the parks combined. The two kings were the most surprising since I had never seen them before (or since) out of a zoo and they were just gorgeous.

No, I always ride with a buddy. But we do tend to get spread apart on Cholla because hes in better shape than me, so it could look like we were riding solo.

Luckily I have yet to see a snake especially on Cholla as that is my first climb of the day.

I have seen a male and female deer running along as I was to the bottom of Mathis.

The off white snake sounded like a nice looking speckled rattlesnake, did it have an overly large head?

My favorite snake sighting so far was at work last year where we saw an adult cal king eating a sub adult red diamond rattlesnake,

I ran into my first snake at Peters Canyon which scared the crap out of me and sent me home.

We came across this little guy when we were doing the trailwork last month in Peters, he was so stuffed he could hardly get off the trail.
