A friend of mine recently purchased a Brooks saddle off ebay and he was happy he got it for 200 bucks. I thought that was stupid and asked what kind it was. Here's what he bought for 200 but I see at Beyond bikes that same saddle is over 320. Can anyone tell me why this saddle should cost this much?

you pay extra for the scratch-n-sniff models.

honestly, i think some people just buy expensive stuff because it costs more. it's just a saddle, and if that makes people excited, then chances are they haven't seen a nipple up close in awhile. :lol:

Same reason why people buy a bentley over a bmw. Sure both are nice, but when it comes down to it its what the buyer perceives is the "bling" factor. I'm sure in your friends mind its the best saddle in the world at least for now and he scored a killer deal.
 
It's not a name brand thing, it's a QUALITY thing. Brooks has been making the finest saddles in the world since the 1800's. If you want a saddle that will last you a lifetime and that only gets better with age, buy a Brooks. If you're more concerned about the latest marketing hype, look elsewhere.

I've got a Brooks B-17 on my touring bike and I wish I had one on my road and mountain bike as well. Ti Swift on the road bike and Ti Swallow on the mountain bike, please Santa.

...because it's got adjustable travel feature built into it. Great for HT single speed 29'r croud.

Not such that big a deal for susp riders or for peeps into stunts and crashes. Too expensive to be replacing on a regular basis.
 
I'm fine with my on-sale WTB Shadow V... I've had my bike tumble on the seat a couple times and it's unscathed... Chrome rails... 20$. :-k
 
well if you think $200 is to much... dont buy one...!!!
and the price on hand work is always more...!!! ow and it trendy too...

id pay $1000 for one built by blind mute siamese twins from thailand.....just so i can say i got one....!!!!
 
How much something is worth is completely subjective. I'm sure 99% of the world thinks your crazy for spending however much you do on a bike part.

Much like tiny bicycles, they don't work for everybody ;)

If you found a saddle that works for you that doesn't weigh over a pound, congratulations. In 13+ years of riding and trying, I couldn't do it. I'd have one of those minimalist saddles all the cool kids use if I didn't have to walk like I had a rash afterwards, but it ain't gonna happen. I gave the various ass-hatchet designs plenty of chances to prove otherwise. They failed ME.

If I had spent the $85 I paid for my B17 Champion back in 1996 when I started riding instead of 2009, I would have saved several hundred dollars and had far less discomfort.

This is so true, all of my friends that do not ride, they see my bike for the first time and say "that looks expensive, what does something like that cost? a couple grand?

I tell them, for two grand you could maybe get last years frame and shock new.....then the fun begins talking about price of each part.....

Not that I care either how much something costs, usually they want to know why so I tell them and show them, then they just say...."CRAZY!"
 
Brooks saddles will outlive every other component on the bike. Hell, if taken care of it will probably outlive several owners.

As for the price, pay the price once and forget about it, or get nickled and dimed over several years and several saddles.

I still think it's absurd for that amount of money. I've found a number of saddles that have worked for me at 1/10 the price (WTB). I just think it's gone over the top now. I'd love to try one of these as a lot of my friends (road & mountain ) are now riding them and swear by them but I'm never going to spend that kind of coin on a saddle. (I hope)

It shouldn't, however, because there are folks who will buy it without a second thought.

I never thought I would spend $1800 on a bike, or $3k. But I did when my bike was my only transportation and I wanted something that would last and be dependable in evey facet of my riding.

Now, $1200 suits my needs with room to grow. But try explaining to a non-bike rider why a $60 department store bike won't do the job just as well.

Why would anyone spend enough money to buy a house in the midwest on a truck that requires a large stepladder just to get into it and never sees the dirt - especially when the driver is 5'6" or shorter?

Depends on what you're into and makes you happy.
 
Unless you've tried a Brooks, it's hard to even have an opinion. Brooks saddles are Epic luxury! I've got a Brooks B-17 on my commuter and it's by far the most comfortable saddle I've ever used. (The B-17 is the cheapest one.) You don't even need to wear riding shorts. However, they are really heavy and not durable enough for MTB. The Ti versions are really expensive but they have alot more titainum in them than regular ti saddles.
