    Crichton / Grisham are great.

Zippy, if you like Eddings try some of the stuff by Terry Brooks. Same genre, just MUCH better written, IMHO. I agree about Eddings, it all started to sound the same after a couple books...

Another unique classic, and one that's had a huge influence on sci-fi/fantasy is "A Voyage To Arcturus" by David Lindsay. It was written in 1920 and there's not another novel (before or since) like it.

I loved both of those. Another to try if you haven't already is A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Apalachian Trail.

I've read one or two of Ludlum's books, and I think possibly one of the Bourne series, but can't remember.

Old school Grisham is good. I haven't read any of his newer stuff.

I read that one first! Very entertaining! Made me want to hike parts of the AT at some point ;)

Bourne(after the first) was ruined in the theater IMO....so were most turned to film....or maybe whats going on in my head is better than what the directors put up? Har :p

One of the last ones I read thats in theaters is The Ruins...creepy. I don't even know how I stumble on half of what I read but I hope most never makes it to the screen... (vampire romance is so inappropriate)

The first four of the vampire chronicles were awesome. I think something got lost along the way, though.

I like Pitt/Cruise, but the book was WAY better than the movie (big surprise!).

Hmmm, well if we are talking books (one of my favorite subjects), I recommend "Guns, Germs and Steel" by Jared Diamond (Pulitzer Prize winner) and "The Song of the Dodo" by David Quammen (The author gives credit to another 19th century Naturalist, wherein saying that Darwin plagiarized most of his work). Thats a little light reading. For fun, I try the $5.99 section at Barnes and Noble for classics and fiction. I loved both "The Kite Runner" and "A Thousand Splendid Suns". K

You have got to finish them! I finally got the last three books and the ending, well what can I say, at least its better than any of the SK books I have read.

I'll jump on that with some others i've enjoyed of late:

-Blood Meridian, Cormac McCarthy - voilent, nihilistic, confrontational, and outstanding; i would recommend McCarthy as an author period, all of his works have impressed me
    -Under the Volcano, Malcolm Lowry
-The Rum Diary, Hunter Thompson - his only fiction, written before his years of 'Gonzo' journalism
-anything from Charles Bukowski, especially Ham on Rye - be forewarned, he is misogynistic and crude
-Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Robert Persig - meditations and discussions on the philosophy of 'quality' as the author embarks on a cross-country motorcycle trip with his son

    I'll think of more later...

FWIW, my great grandpa, who i think is very smart, and as the best advice has always told me, "Brandon, if you rad a book, find a book that was written about firsthand experiences. Think about it, If ten guys wrote that book, You are piggy backing the lives of ten men."
I think thats some of the best advice ive ever recieved

back on the topic of cycling oriented books...has anyone read the book "10 points"?

it is kinda roadie crit oriented but i thought it was an awesome read for any amateur athlete pursuing goals.

it is written by Bill Strickland the editor of Bicycling magazine.

Ah yes, Bukowski... I love the fact that I live just a few miles from the race track. For christsakes, there's a Costco there now.

My Bukowski picks are Post Office, Women, and Hollywood.

+1 for "Into Thin Air". The original PCT hiker wrote a book about it, Erik Ryback (?). He was kinda young at the time, but if you've ever wanted to through hike, it's a good read.
