42 and try to keep up!!!

See the same thing at XC and endurance stuff. The 40+ cat are just killer. By then, they've weeded out the weak, feeble and undedicated. Nothing left but badasses.

Not exactly true. I'm in there, so I bust up the last statement.

Throw in some days in the gym. I'm back working with my trainer one day a week now, and will get back to my usual two day a week routine soon (I've been off the bike a while...). Hope to get back on the bike soon as well. Did someone mention it takes longer to heal at our age (soon to be 51).

What I did when training for triathlons was to get a workout program from a professional trainer. These are relatively inexpensive if you buy it on-line. Stick to the program and try very hard not to miss any workouts. Pay attention to what they say about the workouts. If it says to spin and keep the heart rate down, do it. Don't deviate from it. When I went out on fun weekend rides I tended to exceed my heart rate and paid for it. When I did my tri's though I almost always was in the top 5 in my age division on the bike and a lot of times I'd have the best bike time for my age group. (Xterra's I took first, they don't train for the technical part and get freeked by the rocks). I guess it all depends on what you're trying to accomplish.
My coach taught me there are basically two types of training.
Endurance = total time on bike mostly concentrating on pace. These workouts were a lot different then the speed ones.
Speed training was done with intervals and more recovery days. Very painful but you'll get a lot faster.

What a great thread, this rag tag STR group is very diverse. I give full respect to those older riders that push themselves up these damn mountains. You don't need to keep up with anyone!! My philosophy is we are only as fast as our slowest man or woman.

Started turning my life around so to speak in May. At 45 I was Fat and out of shape...By October I had lost 45 and I felt good enough to attempt the SO Cal 50 at Vail..I only completed one lap, could have done more but did not want to die on the north side of the lake#-o...Anyway I felt so good out riding those 30 somethings on their expensive bikes on my POS $400 hard tail :).

I'm sure some weeding out occurs, but how come the 40+ is one of the largest groups? I think we're all going through mid-life crises and have something to prove... Which is fine. At least it gets me riding!

Wow, you guys are freekin OLD. What about OMR? I think Greg is over 65 and he kicks the shiat out of a lot of younger riders and he's very humble about it. Never talks smack just rides right on by you as your busting a lung trying to keep him in sight.

I like riding with OMR and watching him rip the legs off the younger guys!!
