Not mountain biking, but after rock climbing at Keller's Peak. And, don't worry, I've been catching, handling, and identifying snakes for years both here and in Southeast Asia through the herpetology department at the university I attended. No harm was done to either I or the snake.

Ran into these guys within less than a mile of each other at Aliso. They were taken last spring right as the snakes starting coming out again. The first one was on Westridge near the water tower and the second was found right below the power lines at Rockit. These were my first real encounters with snakes since this was my first year biking so I was a little freaked out.

Saw this guy out near Palm springs before Christmas. He was not happy to see us. Zoom in to see how close our tires came. He never rattled..

Two Snakes in one day.....Seems like their coming OUT.

Is their a snake related post around here?

I think my road bike will be getting in more miles this summer.:beer:
 
Was out a Upper Las Virgines this past weekend a spotted a couple of baby rattlers. They're starting to show, so watch were you stop. Increased rain, means increased rodents, means more snakes. Know where your at and have at least a basic plan on treatment and getting help/out.

From what I have heard bite kits are virtually worthless. Remember that the only snakes you have to worry about are rattlers, so keep your hands out of holes and cracks in rocks- they aren't out to get you! Best thing to do if you get bit is to keep your heart rate low and the bitten area lower than your heart if possible and get to the hospital.

Bottom line: Watch where you are going and be observant of your surroundings.

Another trick is to program yourself to say, "take me to see Sean Bush at Loma Linda University Hospital." in the height of venom intoxication.

He's pretty much the best in the business. Here's a bit of info:

I used to work with him a bit, and he is really cool, way smart, and super good at what he does. Oh, and all of what Gray said is a good idea too.
 
I thought I remembered reading somewhere that if you have a knife with you (I always do) to basically cut an X over the bite area. Thus causing yourself to bleed and along with it some of the venom.
 
Saw my first snake of the year in O'neil this morning. Cute lil' 4 footer sun bathing on the fire road.
 
well I did a little research after seeing this post and a few sources say "bleeding/ Pumping/Sucking" on a bite is worthless because it wont do much in terms of venom and can cause more tissue damage than necessary. Not completely sure on what the correct method to use would be so in the case I get bit, F*** it im calling for some help. Better safe then sorry in my book.
 
went for a run in both crystal cove and lcwp today, saw three rattlers, one dead, jumped over a small one, and had a medium size one going full rattle while coiled in the brush right off the singletrack. not very fun when you are going jogging speed with bare legs ;-)

so def, keep an eye out and take notice of where you stand when you stop to take breaks.
