Was riding on the singletrack trails today at lunchtime next to the Nix Nature Center and came up to a diamondback sun-bathing on the trail. Tossed a little rock in his direction - he didn't even bother to coil up. Eventually he decided to turn around and slither off the trail.

Thought it was best to stick to the fire roads today. :?:

Almost ran over this one today on Tijeras Creek - 24-30 inches, I guess. Looked well-fed. Couldn't have cared less when I passed him, or walked back to take his picture. Second one I almost ran over. Missed the tail of one small one, not a rattler, about 15 minutes earlier. Perfect day for snakes - cool and sunny.

Saw the bigger one last week in bonelli, and a 2 foot rattlesnake today with yellow rattles and black tail, went in the bushes before I can take a pic. This big one too went into the bushes when I got too close to take a look.

Is it just me, or do these things look L-O-N-G-E-R than they have in previous seasons? Joy. :?:

It's funny you would say that. I came across 4 snakes in the last week and they all seemed to be longer than usual.

Saw a nice sized rattler on chutes today. A hiker stopped me to warn me about it. He said it tried to bite him as he walked by.....I hate snakes

Alligator lizards are naturally aggressive, and one of their defense mechanisms is to open there jaws wide to scare off predators, especially when someone or something gets in their face, like my camera. Each time I would hold it close to the gopro lens--almost touching it in this pic--that was the little guy's reaction. He crawled and slithered away happily ever after, as I released him back into the deep brush.

I have a love/hate relationship with this thread.

My big fear is one of my kids coming across one of those while riding. Heading to Sycamore for camping in a few weeks, don't know if I dare let my kids ride the single track. Maybe I'm being to paranoid...

I keep a close eye on the weeds and mustard grass while doing singletrack, can't help but feel vulnerable and at the mercy of luck.

Almost got snake bite yesterday, it actually struck at me with great anger of a hiss. Did not jump over this big orange reptile as I should of. I was a bit on the quick side coming down cactus via Whiting. I gave it room by moving the left but still, too close for comfort. However, if I did jump over it, still would of been a close call.
