Any Rock Climbers?

It does say general discussion.
Any one have links to some good rock climbing social sites or suggestions for beginning classes. I have found some links to some Joshua Tree area schools.
I have done the indoor thing a few times and would like to go outdoors.
Any tips appreciated!!

Try e-mailing Troy at this site, troymayr.com, he's a friend of mine, and has written a couple of books on rock climbing. He might be able to point you in the right direction. Tell him Jason made the recommendation.......wait......maybe not.:lol: Just kidding, Troy's a cool guy, and a former world class rock climber.

There is The Rock Gym (or something like that) in Coastal Mexico..er...Costa Mesa. It's an indoor rock climbing gym. Although I'm not into rock climbing (they say I'm too fat), I have several mtb friends who climb/train there.

I sorta climb. I used to climb on a regular basis... years ago. Now I'm a total sportie. I hop off the rock in the summer and only venture out on the cooler nights. Just starting up again this week!
Where are you living? Yorba Linda has a great spot call Rock City. I'll be there Tuesday night.
The place in Costa Mesa is called Rockreation. I prefer Rock City simply because of the atmosphere. Its a bit more low key.

Call Bob Gaines at Vertical Adventures http://www.verticaladventures.com

Bob and his guides are top notch, some of the best climbers you could ever hope to climb with.

He offers classes, but I'd recommend you and a friend going in together and hiring one of the guides for a day. That way you'll maximize your learning experience as well as your time on the rock.

In looking at the web page, it looks like Dave Mayville is guiding for Bob again. Dave might be THE most gonzo individuals I've ever met. On more than one occasion I've been gripped, run out, facing a very limited future, and the thing that helped be focus was thinking "what would Dave do?"

It's been ten years since I've seen that lad, but if you can tolerate unbridled gonzo-ness, I strongly recommend him.

Didn't know I would get so many responses!! I was actually looking into the one day Vertical Adventure classes and see if outdoor rock climbing is something I want to pursue. So RustyIrons gives a rec. Thanks..

BTW, the "Rock Gym" is in Signal Hill. I just killed my forearms there today..:-s

I'm a climber (mainly easy/moderate trad, alpine/backcountry stuff, some alpine ice, and a couple of big walls).

I'd recommend climbing regularly at a local gym (I go to Rockreation in Costa Mesa). It's a great way to meet people who are into climbing, and you can kinda suss out who you'd actually trust and want to spend time w/outdoors. If you're not experienced yourself, try and go w/someone who's better.

I guess guides can get you out there, but you can learn an awful lot from experienced friends. Let me know if you're ever down in OC; I usually climb on Tue/Thu.

There is a Rock Gym in Signal Hill too. Good place.

I used to be an instructor for a young men's organization, but that was many years ago.

There's also one in HB called ClimbX. I think any of these places could point you to outdoor companies. I love to rapell but getting up there is a whole different thing for me.
