saw this guy on Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations" solemn show about New Orleans and also heard about the book through NPR.

it's a bunch of his short articles/commentaries about life in the "Big Uneasy" following Katrina.

amazing stuff. pick it up. I'm only 50 pages in and i can tell that the book will be done by the end of the week, and this is definitely not my normal reading fare.

I vow to read more from Christopher Moore. His writing is hilarious and entertaining as hell.

As for my current selection, it's THE book by Dale Carnegie. I try to revisit the book once a year. Also on deck is Learned Optimism by someone whose name I can't recall. It looks to be an interesting read.

All for a Few Perfect Waves: The Audacious Life and Legend of Rebel Surfer Miki Dora


Its obviously about a surfer but one of the most interesting semi biography I have ever read. Its pretty much pieced together from stories from friends, family, etc... and other articles. It follows a time line through his life. Its kinda a story that is a cross between "Catch me if you can" and "Endless Summer".

I would highly recommend it even if your not a surfer. It talks about surfing but its more about his life and the pursuit of the waves the waves.

amazing book! the follow up isn't bad either. "in defense of food"...you will never shop for groceries the same again (and that is a good thing)!

Just read 2 of Lance Armstrong's books last month, "Its not about the Bike" and "Every Second Counts". Both were awesome and inspiring books, anyone who rides a bike would enjoy either of these books.

I assume you have you read Lamb? Damn fine book!

For those who do not know Christopher Moore...

Lamb is the is heartfelt, satirical, suppositional story of Jesus's Missing 30 years as told by his best friend Biff who happily commits all of Jesus's sins for him to explain what its all about.

Oh it is neither offensive nor serious.

Good timing! I'd been thinking of starting the same thread because of a book that I just started, but I hesitated because of the title. But since the ball is rolling already...

The book just came out about a month ago, and it was written by a board member from another one of the other popular bike message boards, so the voice of the book is easy to get because it's just like reading any of the threads we're all used to seeing--except it's longer. And it has cool illustrations.

It's basically an introduction to riding, but it's detailed and fun to read (even if you already know most of the stuff that's in there). I like it because it does a good job of capturing the life and mentality of a bike racer.

Well truth be told it's kinda interesting to try and place risks, negotiate w/ carriers...etc... I work at a surplus line brokerage / MGA.

One of my agents, Derek Jones, is a mtb'er also and rides at S. Oaks =P
If you're lookin for a trustworthy agent he's your man. Plus he MTB's. Win/Win

Just watch the movie.

I assume you're joking...it's a fine movie -- I liked it very much -- but the book is nearly always better than the subsequent movie, very rarely the reverse.

Jon Krakauer is an excellent writer. His Everest book before ITW, Into Thin Air, was very good. After ITW he wrote a very interesting book about Mormon fundamentalism, Under the Banner of Heaven. Especially interesing now in light of what's now going on in Texas.

I just finished The Tender Bar, by Pulitzer-winning journalist J R Moehringer, about a kid growing up fatherless, substituting the local tavern owner and patrons as role models, and becoming a regular at that infamous bar. A great coming-of-age story.
