Mountain biking in Mexico (baja) TJ, Rosarito, Ensenada? Any comments

Though the Baja California- Norte region (Tijuana, Mexicali, Tecate, Playas de Tijuana, Rosarito, Ensenada) is much 'safer' from the narco violence its still something to think about. Most of the violence has been chased east of B.C.N. (Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahila, Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas- with these last two states seeing an increase of violence/activity). Tecate and especially Mexicali would be the place to go MTBing due to the surrounding mountains. Check out Mexicali MTB.com:http://www.mexicalimtb.com/ The site has some race video. Looks like fun: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBVRs8PlqVc&feature=pla

Here's a link to the Baja Epic Mountain Bike Race scheduled for November 4, 2010. It looks like a super cool event. It has shuttles to and from the airports AND hotels between stages!! I know a couple of people that work for Too Much Fun Promotions and they always put on great events. I think theres a clip of this on You tube. I agree with Bryguy regarding Copper Canyon, Chihuahua. Unfortunately the cartels are known to have activities scattered around in Copper Canyon. The city of Creel had the infamous killings. The most recent issue of Adventure Cyclist magazine just had a super good read regarding touring in Mexico and they wrote about this area as they were passing by it and heading toward Central and South America. The writer did mention his concern with the narco violence but everything went well.

I'd be more weary of border towns. I spent some time in Guadalajara and the countryside at a ranch... man did i screw up by not taking my bike.

Met the owner of this place in baja that just seems like a good spot:

I ride a lot in ensenada, rosatito & TJ with no problem at all, couple of races and everything has being good and fun.
Most of the time XC

I would not ride in Mexico off of the main highways alone, unless you are of Hispanic decent, speak Spanish etc.
Even then you could have your nice shiny mountain bike taken from you. The hills/mountains around Tijuana,Rosarito,Ensenada and Puerto Nuevo have a lot of dope growers, speed labs and smugglers roaming them.
Unless you are traveling in a large group forget about it.
The State Dept. has been issuing travel warnings for Tijuana etc on and off for the last couple years now.
My family has a house in Puerto Nuevo and we have been going there for years. The last year and a half it has been
very sketchy at times down there. Do not let anyone fool you, the cartels operate in Rosarito & Tijuana also.
Organized bike rides and races are pretty safe because security is stepped up by the police and Army.
Even then do not wander the streets alone especially after dark.
I just would not consider off road mountain biking alone or with a friend a good idea these days.

It'll be great training and see your true top speed when the cartels and thugs are shooting at you for fun.
