Been off the bike for a few months with little to no motivation to ride. Been enjoying spending time with the family, but I'm afraid I'll never get back on my bikes again. Help!

All it takes is one ride to get bitten by the bug again. Plan a short ride with you buddies. By planning a ride ahead of time with others, it keeps you accountable. Good luck.

I know a lot of people who are reluctant to ride, but as soon as you get them out there they get all excited again. As soon as they get back into the routine of life things return to the way they were and it's difficult to convince them to get back out there.

All I gotta say is just get out there for a short ride after work or in the morning on the weekend. You don't have to spend a whole day riding or even half a day.
 
maybe daylight saving time change will give you more ops to ride. Family def comes first so is being healthy so you can be there.
Even a short 30 min ride after work, my most frequent weekday solo ride, 400 calories burned is equal to two beers earned. It's too
easy to get complacent to count on having riding buddies. Every little bit counts...

Let's start with an easy one, first one's frreeeee!
 
Passions ebb and grow, so if you don't feel like it don't stress it. But if you like the idea of riding, hop and a bike and:

Ride with your kids to school.
Ride to the store to buy some eggs.
Ride around Newport Back Bay.
Ride to a brew-pub and get your drink on.
Ride at CicLAvia in April.

Lot of ways to have fun on bikes. I'm as happy riding down to Trader Joes or the library as I am on the SART in Angelus Oaks. Different kind of happy, but still love both!

Nothing like brewcycling to bring fun back into the picture.
Not every ride needs to be a race training ride.
I have more fun riding my bike, than training on it.
 
I feel ya. My riding has declined since last year but I am enjoying other hobbies. Like suggested above, I think I've figured out I need to do a few group rides.

So with the time change, here comes Taco Tuesday's!!! :clap:
 
Those who know me well know I get into these funks all the time. I may not be like some who seem to go crazy if I don't ride, in fact I only rode a total of 30 times all of last year.

I like to surf and hike as well & I work for an airline and have gotten the travel bug it again of late. I signed up for the VQ again this year which gets me somewhat motivated to ride/train ;) or I commit to trip for some new dirt which gets me going and looking forward to some fun times.

It may sound crazy coming from someone like me who used to ride everyday sometimes twice a day, but there is more to life than "just" riding. The trails will be there, but some may not due to fires or closures, but time with family and your kids while they're still around will not.
 
Go out and buy something new...a tire, new shorts, heck..get a new bike, and you will want to ride again. Really.
 
It is definitely important to spend time with the family as we all have busy life and schedule. I have to make similar decision myself as I have two boys, 6 and 9. I split my riding time and family time over the weekend so I get to do at least one ride that I want to do on one weekend day (either Saturday or Sunday). I have discussed my desire to be able to ride over the weekend with my family and they are okay with it. I also let them know which day I will be riding ahead of time so we can all plan accordingly for the weekend. Sometimes my family and I will just ride our bikes (we all have our own bikes) together on the dirt path near our house in Fountain Valley so we all get a little of riding and exercise together.

My point is spending time with the family is definitely important but there are ways to get back on the bike either doing your own ride or riding with the family.

Since the beginning of the year, I've been in that funk too. It's been busy at work, and my son's Little League season has started. I umpire too, so it just takes a lot out of my free time. I'm hoping to get motivated to go riding again.

Agree. I suggest you crank some skynard simple man and go out for solo single speed ride with no pack, just two bottles, and ride till you are out of water. Riding is my therapy for the shat that I endure daily. Oh and sport a t-shirt. It makes all the difference for me.

Hard to admit it, but joining and "following" my friends on Strava has kept me motivated to ride at least 2X a week for the last 3 months.

3X a week would be tough, but 2X a week certainly is doable. The other thing keeping me motivated is one of my weekly rides is a road ride...I know when I can't ride the mountain bike because of whatever reason (boyscouts, kid's band competition, etc.) I can just roll out my front door and go for a quick 10-15 mile ride so my Strava avg. of 2 rides p/week is maintained.
