Breathless Agony Roll Call

registered for mulholland challenge today (event #1 of king of the mountains). kinda want to see how that goes before committing to breathless agony. think it will sell out before april?

I am in for Breathless Agony

More expensive, less mileage, less climbing, and ultimately, less pain. The choice was easy for me!

It will sell out before noon tomorrow.

Me + few friends.

Q: Do you have to specify how far you want to go before you start? Or can I am for the 114m and weenie out at 50miles if I want to?

just signed up for BA....so im thinking, if im gonna do this why not go for the glory and shoot for the coveted KOM jersy? Is the Mulholland challange as popular and will it also sell out? I might be traveling that weekend so i can't commit now.

I think I am out this year...even after last year's disappointing showing for me...
Good luck to all...be careful out there during training and the actual ride.. with the 330 probably closed on nice weekends it may be a bit busy.

Cool - looks like we'll have a decent STR contingent. I'm shooting for less than 6 hrs but depends on how fit and injury free I am on ride day. bvader is correct - you get credit for the last pass you summit (as long as you check back in at the finish) so you can decide during the ride.

I'm doing all my training out here in Antelope Valley; Winter/Spring will be long dirt climbs like Leona Divide and easier but longish road climbs like Bouquet and San Francisquito canyons. As weather allows will ride Big Pines Hwy and Big Rock Creek in Wrightwood, Angeles Forest on the road bike. Also will ride Mulhulland DC or an unsupported equivalent. If anyone wants to come out here and try something different let me know.

I've done both the KOM and I've done BA a couple times. I really like BA's finish. I haven't done any long road rides since I did Tour de Foothills which I only finished 65 miles of. I'll do a long road ride in the next couple of weeks and see if I'm up to it. I know BA will be sold out by then but I can still get in.

In for all three rides of the KOM...Mulholland came close last year but didn't sell out 'cuz the next day was the L'etape du California in the same area (I get a gold star for doing both...and finishing the long route on Sunday). Breathless sold out in about 8 hours...it'll take longer this year...it hadn't sold out as of tonight and was looking at 500 of the 750 or so spots filled up...Heartbreak sold out about a month in advance. Breathless lets you roll your entry to the next year if you can't make it...not sure what Planet Ultra's policy is.

Wishfully thinking that they'll build a good base to launch my Leadville 100 training.

If you are ever training further South (a.k.a. Riverside area) PM me and we can get a ride in. I am planning for a fast time and wouldn't mind someone at the start of the event to stick with who has a similar time goal. I will probably start the ride at around 7am when the day comes and you are more than welcome to join me.

Last year I was not too far off pace from the guys who finished around 5:30. I was only 10 minutes back starting the climb up the 38, but I was completely un-preprepared and started cramping. By the time I got up to Angeles Oaks, I was 40 minutes off their pace and when I finished, it had taken me a total of 6:53 minutes.

I expect to be a little faster this year.

mr. plow and I are also hoping to pull down some quick times. We are both in for the KOM series. I know MnMDan and FFW are both into long rides as well, reading their other posts here.

Chris, you are just below me in MV, I'm up in Redlands. Let's get together for some training rides. We have a ride scheduled Saturday, up 39 to Crystal Lake, East Fork up to GRR then to Baldy and down to Upland. If anybody reading is interested, PM or email me.

Chris B thanks for the invite - it's tough for me to get away but I'll send you a PM when if i can get out there.

Jeff^d that sounds like a good ride. Let me know when and I'll see if I can get out there.

If I can train consistently the next few months I know I can do a fast time (already much fitter now than I was when MnMDAn blew by me on the firsh Heartbreak climb last year). It would be good to ride with some of you to gauge my fitness and have some company while suffering up the hills.

sounds like a good idea...count me in.

One question...Im currently running a 11-23 10s cassette and wonder if i need to swap out for something in the 25-28 low range? Im a decent climber but never done 13k+ elevation in one sitting.

I run 53-39 chainrings and 11-27 cassette most of the year (my old creaky knees need the bigger cog). Right now I have a compact 50-34 because it's early in the year and my knees were really suffering on the big climbs. Even if my knees weren't a problem, the option of a smaller gear is real nice to have on a long and/or steep climb so you can mix up spinning and standing (your riding buddies may make fun of you though:)).
