29er Tire Combos/Recommendations

How does $13 a tire grab you for a CST 29 x 2.25 Caballero at Bike Stop or Speedgoat when on special?

My Mountain King rear tire is taking a beating up here in the Bay Area, so I want something that will last a bit longer. I was thinking of going to a 70 Shore A Ignitor.

Since the CST has a wire bead, I may even try to run it tubeless. It would be a cheap experiment.

If you try that, let us know how it works out. You may have to throw a tube in it first to get at least 1 bead to seat, then pull the tube out, put the Stan's valve back in and Stans sealant. Wire bead tires and tubeless don't get along well with tire irons, so I've read. I understand Stan's Flow's are hard to get tires on and off the rim without tire irons? What has your experience been?

I just take a new tube, poke a hole in it, and squirt in a 4.5 oz mixture of 1.5 oz Stans, 1.5oz Slime Tubeless tire sealant, .75 oz of water and .75 oz of regular Ethelyne Glycol (cheap anti freeze) coolant. Then I patch the hole, let it sit for 24 hours, then install it. A bit heavy, yes, but headache free from flats in AZ with all the cholla spines I never saw that were in the middle of the trail. I rarely have to add air to my tubes since doing this.

I am happy running Maxxis CrossMarks front and rear. They roll super fast, are very light, and have a respectable tread pattern.

I have Kenda Klaws on both ends.

They work great for me - but I do DH 99% of the time.

And the price from Jenson can't be beat.

I would liken these tires to the equivalent of BF Goodrich All Terrain K/O's. Grip pretty good, and numerous times I've gone 80 to 100,000 miles on a set of 4. The Ford Explorer went 100k miles on the last set.

Running Mavic TN-719 rims and want a lighter tire to run tubeless (bike came stock with the Nevegal 29ers, 850 gr or so).
Ride primarily fire roads and pretty non-technical singletrack with occasional technical (say 3.5 on 5 point scale). Want tubeless just because I like the lower pressure on the steeper climbs.
Ride in the Valley and OC.
Going to get the Stan's strips.
Recommendations for something light yet not too fragile?

I have those rims. I am using Nevegal in front and crossmark in rear. I didnt use stans strips though, I used a 26" Maxxis strip I got for cheap. Has had no problems at all. Leaks a little over a few days just check pressure before I ride.

Those Maxxis strips seem hard to come by nowadays. Tried to find some but couldn't.
Isn't that Nevegal around half a pound heavier than the Crossmark?

Try Bontrager Jones ACX or XR, weight is decent and sidewall is durable. A lot of people like Kenda Small block 8 but sidewall strength is questionable.

I see they make a tubeless versison. You referring to that or the regular clincher? Didn't seem to fare that well in mtbr reviews.

I really, really like the Specialized Captain 2.2 (they also come in .2.0) 2Bliss tires. Good stuff.

I think they have a tubeless ready version. I have these and just use Stan's strips and some Stan's fluid. Working like a charm

29er Tires

I am building my new Ventana El Rey with Shimano 29er wheelset and Rampage tires.

I'm thinking of going with some Kenda Karma 1.9s since I weigh 160. I feel the stock 2.3 tires (Exiwolf) are slowing my ride (singlespeed). I've read a few posts saying go big, then the poster says they weigh 240. Is there a connection with bigger tires for bigger riders? Any suggestions/recommendations on the tire down-sizing? What about 2.2(F)/1.9(R)?

2.5 WeirWolf LT up front
2.1 Crossmark in the rear.

For the past two months, this has been the perfect combo with dry, tacky trails. The Crossmark really seems to offer the best compromise between low rolling resistance, decent grip & durability.

I was in love with my 2.25 Racing Ralph for the 5 rides I was able to enjoy it on the rear before tearing the sidewall. Simply amazing performance, but I can't trust a tire with sidewalls that thin. If Schwalbe ever wants to make the RR with their Snakeskin sidewalls, I will gladly try them again and give up some weight savings.

Serfas made a cheap wannabe navigal I use up front with a nano raptor in the rear. I had a real kenda up front but it was way to heavy. The serfas seems faster and was like 200g's lighter with a wire bead.
I went tubeless on my new build after a pinch flat so I have a ACX, jones XR(rear) combo which I've only tested on a fire road. It seems every bit as fast but a lot lighter, but the wheels are lighter too.

Small Block 8's

I like how fast and stable the Kenda Small Block 8's have been for me. I run the tubed version tubless with stans on his ztr 355 for some light weight super quick xc wheels. Worked great on the whiting to old camp down the luge run.

I found a 2.0 Spec Fast Trak that I bought cheap many months ago and apparently never used. What's the consensus on this tire? Fast with no traction? I've run SB8's with no concerns and those appear to have way less tread.

With the races coming up, I might throw it on the back and put a 2.25 RR on the front that I just bought.

Running everything tubeless btw
