I've seen two in Santiago Oaks in the last few weeks.

The first one was somewhat expected. Evening but the temps were perfect for sssssssssssnakes. Almost to the top of Oak...gorgeous snake!


Last night we were hiking with the little dog and it was a bit cool out just after sunset. We were coming down the Mountain Goat switchbacks and totally not paying attention when the dog walked directly in front of one sprawled out across the trail. The dog was on one side of the snake and we were on the other...I may have freaked out a bit. Okay, I cried once I knew the dog was safe. Definitely keeping a better eye out from now on, no matter the temps. Feeling dumb that I let my guard down.

I went through a period last month where I would see a rattler on STT almost every other day and they would always block the trail. Recently I saw one on a cooler day just like you and did not expect it. Now I really look down the trail!

Here is one on the bottom of the Luge last month. He was pissed. Hard to tell but he is standing straight up while coiled.

Scott...I live right in front of Oaks and I'm out there nearly daily. I've been on the lookout for a couple of months and I've warned the kids (teenagers) since they sometimes venture over there with friends. It was funny, I was hiking with a friend the night that we saw the first snake and just ten minutes prior he told me to pay attention since it was perfect snake weather. I've been hyper aware since seeing that one. We hiked all weekend in Sedona and I was constantly on the lookout. Go figure that my first hike back in the backyard when it was cool enough for me to be shivering (definitely didn't have my mind on snakes) and in a hurry to get home, we encounter one. Makes sense though, he was all stretched out soaking up the warmth from the trail. Lesson learned. Paranoia is back in full force!

Did quite a long ride (for me) today at LCWP and haven't seen any snakes there for a while... Funnily enough, seen lots at my local park recently, but usually they're gone before I can take a pic on my phone

So I was getting a bit miffed as my ride was almost over, and still no snake sighting - but as I exited Fenceline and went through gate 8 to Bommer Ridge, this guy was there.
It was foggy/misty for quite a while there this morning, then all of a sudden the sun broke through and it warmed up very quickly. This guy was taking his time and didn't seem bothered about having his picture taken

Saw this King crossing the sidewalk while walking the dogs on tuesday. Wifey almost stepped on it thinking it was a stick.It was close to 4 feet in length, which is pretty big for a king.

A swing and a miss!
I've seen plenty of snakes out and about, but I've never had one actually have a go at me.
I was riding with my wife Tuesday evening in Dos Vientos (Ventura County). She was in front and ran over a rattler stretched across the trail in a blind turn. The snake coiled and when I came through seconds later... he was ready and pissed! Despite my wife's warning, I didn't have time to react. I passed within 6" of him. He struck at me as I passed, but fortunately for me, he miscalculated speed and distance! Whew!.
