If flat rides from your house are what your looking, the only traffic free local ride would be the San Gabriel River trail. Traffic free but you still may have the locals to deal with cruising through El Monte and Whittier. Ive never had any problems but have heard stories. For a quick run I hit the SGRT to the Whittier Dam,turn around, back up and around the Dam along the riverbed to the end at the base of Hwy 39. Turn around and head home. I can usually make around 25 to 30 out of it in 1.5 hours. For a quick hillclimb, the road up Chantry isnt to bad. You would have to deal with the cars near Santa Fe Dam,but Live Oak>R Myrtle>L Colorado>R Santa Anita isnt that bad. Try to stay off of Huntington and Foothill. Only other semi car free routes would be what Good ol Slappy posted around the RB. If I ride there from my house,I usually stay on Colorado pretty much the whole way. Definetly not for the faint of heart, but Foothill between Santa Anita and Rosemead is pure suicide.
Ive heard there is a route around Bonelli that ive been wanting to dobut not quite sure of the route. Im off on Tuesday and have some time in the AM to get some riding in,let me know if you want a tour around the Bowl.

    http://www.mapmyride.com/

    http://www.bikely.com/

there are a few more, mostly I go with these 2. Don't be afraid to ask roadies you find in your area. Also there are a lot of guys doing the Montrose ride and they do some good routes

Thorn proof tubes work great! I've only been doing road since nov 08 but not one flat yet. I also run max pressure because I'm 215.

When i first got my allez i would get flats maybe once every week. I switched to the Specialized All Condition Armadillo Elite tires and only gotten one flat in about a year. I run 100 PSI for most of my training rides for the extra "suspension". But on days that I wanna haul ass on the river trail I pump them up to 130psi.

David, I know you are a Path regular as am I. However if you need a local shop for quick stuff check out Open Road on Sierra Madre in Pasadena. Steve is a really good guy with a huge shop with tons of stuff in it. He will be a good source for local roads with out much traffic.

Don't be put off at first if he seems grumpy or short. Once he starts recognizing you he will warm up and be a good local resource.

Steve is without question the weirdest guy in the cycling industry, hands down. BUT...you will be hard pressed to find anyone with more knowledge and experience. A mad scientist, if you will. Sometimes I stop by his shop on the way home from work and shoot the shit for an hour or two. Everytime, I leave with more cycling knowledge than I came in with. His shop used to look like a wrecking yard for bikes, but it's taking shape really nicely now. If you need some old, obscure, hard to find bike widget...Steve has got it. At the same time, if you need the new high end flash, he's got all that too. Stop by and learn something.

Unless you are like me and got your team kit for free and are still a new be. I dont care how i look to others on the road as long as im out there and pushing myself to hang with the fast groups as long as i can to get better. im not worring about the look.
