What would be a decent frame to start this build with? I am thinking an inexpensive Al frame but I don’t really know where to start. The classifieds did not have much to look through but I did flip through it. Any ideas?

you can start with a cheap fixed/single speed bike from bikesdirect.com.
i started a long time ago with the windsor hour complete and abused that bike so much and it never let me down. not only that it is most awesomely LIGHT. since then ive upgraded but they do have single speeds that friends of mine and i also have built up with just some upgraded parts and racks. they can make some sweet townies.

best part...FREE SHIPPING and NO TAX.

Also look at price point and their Sette brand I think they have a 29er single speed for like 450.

I had a beach cruiser set up to do groceries and go to the laundry mat. While it worked the front steering was dangerously floppy...grocerys get heavy fast. I now do my shopping and laundry with a Bob Trailer. It handles the weight better, costs less than another bike and can also be used for bike-backing.

Downside is that they are hard to find uses good news is that it can be ordered thru REI so on shipping cost. Be sure to get the model that takes 29 inch MTB tires.

They have a blowout on house brand frames right now, like 90 dollars for this guy.

Those aren't SS friendly and I'd stick with 700c wheels for the road and eyelets for racks. Here's mine, btw, albeit it's a 3 speed...

all of you guys have valid points however I'm looking to keep the bike a road bike so the idea of a 29er is our of the question.

I am thinking about going with this one, unless I can talk to my local shop for something a little less pricey. I just dont want to have to worry about a nice fancy dike getting stolen while in the store.
