All this fixey talk and I leave my house to go SSing afterwork and one of those pesky fixed gear guys (cH4os) is in my driveway. He was doing some crazy loop from inland empire out to Laguna Beach.

I don't care what kind of bike you ride....you're an idiot if you always run stop signs/lights and don't wear a helmet.

On a related note, those bikes and that style have been really popular in Japan as well. And some of the guys even dress the same.

I think they're nuts for riding fixies in congested traffic, though.

    Hey who told you that?

FDB stands for Fixie Da Bomb.

They are scenesters, and hippies, little emo kids, big old rockers and college students. They are regular mountain bikers, and roadies too.

Seriously though, bikes are good. Folks who get motorists attention on bikes by doing things that seem crazy are good.

Those of you who think riding a fixie in trafic is crazy, may wish to stop and think how the majority of folks may percieve your mtb riding.

I recomend a helmet. However, if you feel the risk of not using a helmet is worth it, that is your deal.

Sometimes I flip the rear wheel on my single speed road bike around, and make it a fixie. I ususally use a helmet when I ride. Sometimes I forget my helmet, or just want to feel the wind in my hair. When I am riding my fixie to work, and you drive by in your big SUV and think what an FDB idiot I am, you will be the unhappy one in the car. I will still be enjoying the beautifull day on my bike while I get some exersize and happily get to work without being part of the miserable auto frenzy that is killing this planet.

Those who are heavily judgementall of folks who do not protect themselves should remember that no one is above judgement, and one mans suicide mission is another mans acceptable risk.

There's this chica by my place, rides a bright green fixed, sprint bars, dreads, jeans, DocMatrins, hockey helmet, must be 53/14 and is by no means flat here.

Makes my heart throb everytime I see her.

If yer out there listening Chica, calll me!

    Right. Who *should* care?!

I said this before. Let me clarify my stance. "They" (fixie riders) will thank us for being concerned for them only when due to the extreme rise in popularity of their little sect of the sport of cycling is singled out by the government for being "too dangerous". Not because there are anymore deaths per year in NYC, Detroit, Philly, LA, or any of the other bike messenger meccas (there are actually very few), but because some rich yuppie scum from "The OC" loses her fixie-riding son (emo kid or not) in a terrible cycling accident and her husband happens to be a lawyer and knows some politicians. They will really try to make it illegal to ride fixies at all. CVC 21201a is already a ticket for them, and most cops use it their discretion (even though all fixie riders can skid) with BMX'ers running brake-less. They will thank us when we fight with them for "cyclist rights". The problem is the attitude. "I am free!! I can do anything I want to!!" If "they" (those that choose to be stupid) keep pushing the image and behavior of their sect, It will hurt the whole sport of cycling. Then we will have a reason to pi$$ed at them. Once the bicycle safety legislation and lobbying freight train starts, it wont stop with fixies. MTB's are already in the cross-hairs over access issues. Someone will eventually sue a city, county, or state, to close the places we ride MTB's today because it is just as dangerous as riding a fixie. All because little johnny got squished by a bus while bombing a hill or cutting traffic on his way to school and he didn't have brakes, wasn't wearing the $100 helmet his Grandma bought him for his birthday, and his jeans were so tight they cut off the blood circulation to his brain....

Yes. They will thank us for being so concerned when we sign petitions, and attend public meetings to protect our sport with them.

For now it appears I'm just a mean old Dad, and "they", for the most part, are Dumb-A$$es.

What are you gonna' do, try to convert them? Show off your amazing speed bump absorbing abilities? Huck a picknick table in front of the whole group? Are you planning to challenge their leader to a trackstand-off or something? Will you be wearing your downhill gear, full face helmet, moto goggles, camelback, big ass 2.5" tires?
Yeah, they'd be destroyed fer sure! You might even steal some of their women. Go get em' son!

Funny, but I don't have anything against "new" music of any certain genre. I Just can't enjoy the antics of some the the artists.

The same could be said for fixies and some of my friends who ride them.
