Passed them on the way up. They were taking it pretty easy and I kind of felt like a douche trying to motor past them but I was already half way up and I didn't want to waste the effort I had already made.

We are all different...some are stronger than others....some think they have mash a monster gear if they run SS....some are on 26", some on 29".

Sorry, but you will get a million different answers to that question.

Are you still running the 32x20? Have you tried it yet beyond the Fully Loop?

I always ran 32x20 on a 29er ss. Probably could have gone 32x19, but a 20t was better for longer climbs.

What sort of gearing have you been trying?

This gets asked many times. You'll find lots of the same answers in these threads:
thinking about getting myself into SS & for 29er gearing: SS 29er gearing ratio? anyone 33 or 34 ring?

Please go there to continue discussion about SS gearing. Thanks.

I climbed cholla the second time today. Per strava I finished it in 6:33(Cholla Climb 6.2013) and 6:37(Cholla Climb). Then I saw Brian Lopes KOM record. A little over 2 and a half minutes WTF.

I think I can push harder.

    That is all.

My best has been 5:07.. Which is pretty sad when compared to this guy that was doing "laps" on it staying consistently in the 3:30's.. He did ten that day.. sigh.. haven't taken a swing at it in a while..maybe after the CC event..

I hope the guy who did ten laps on Cholla in one day also did ten descents on Lynx to get back to the bottom - at least get some fun out of all that climbing. I am guessing he did not. Seems like a man with a singular focus. Whatever floats your boat!

Focus to either kill or make himself puke ha ha. If I lived close enough I do it maybe 3 times just for practice.

I think it was Weber, not sure.. I know Johnny O does loops on Cholla too..

There's a side road off to the right you can cruise down..that's their recovery.

I don't have that kinda of mental toughness.. Maybe 3 times.. with Rockit, Meadows, and Mentally sensitive as the recovery loop!!

A few years back I used to do anaerobic endurance intervals using that exact route. Pushing hard up Cholla, and getting my recovery down Lynx. I used to do 4 to 6 intervals. It was a great workout, with the added bonus of the fun descent on Lynx...

Might have to try this. I imagine being pretty bored after 3. Especially if doing Lynx down, each time.

If everyone climbed cholla on a weekly basis there will be no hold ups on the climb!

Been riding Cholla up in the 4:30 range all winter. This seems to be my pace. I have hit some 4:15's when feelin' good. Really need to get to the 4 min club this season. Not to shabby for a clyde though. And I'm one of those that will torture himself and do a 5x cholla ride, down the boring backside for shorter recovery period (about 1 min). Its a really good work out and I'm always stronger the next week.

My recommendation: try one gear higher than you usually ride up Cholla. In granny I clocked in at 4:30. Going 1 gear higher and I ended up with a 4:12 and it wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. Thinking of trying it with the next highest gear to see what happens (faster time, legs blow up, etc.). I tried the same thing on the Harding TT (went one higher than granny on the steep grades) and beat my last year's best time by 6 minutes!
