A couple years ago when we had one of the many big fires (santiago oaks/241) and I had heard a firefighter was stung by a scorpion. I live a stone throws away from santiago oaks park and this morning we caught a scorpion walking in our front door this morning!! I did a little research an apparently our county has four species of scorpion found in our mountains!! Anyone have experience spotting any of these out in the hills or around their home? Please share your story. Btw, apparently only one of theses species venom is considered dangerous. Im working on identifying the one that tried to sneak into my house

Scorpions are just about everywhere. I was really surprised to see one on the Mount Whitney trail in late June of this year. I prefer to leave them alone if I see one.

They are out there, yes. But "dangerous"? naaw. All scorpions are technically venomous, but so is a wasp and a tarantula. I've been stung several times by various scorps. It stings, but I don't even give it a second thought in terms of health. As far as I know, the only somewhat "dangerous" scorp in North America is found in Mexico and Arizona, maybe in San Diego. It's poisonous, but isn't going to kill a healthy adult. It's a bark scorpion.

Anyone who's not allergic, yet has made a big deal of a scorp sting, in my book, is being dramatic. The only really venomous land animals in CA are black widows (again, won't kill you....but you won't be happy, neurotoxic venom) , brown recluse (also, not gonna kill ya but you won't be happy- necrotic venom), and rattlers (really can kill you....but even they usually don't).

Saw a little tiny one on Blackstar on a night ride a month or two ago. I was wondering what the heck it was, it looked like an insect that was moving funny. Then the guy behind me called out "Hey, did you see that scorpion?!" and then I realized he was right--it was really small. I heard some of the smallest ones tend to be more deadly.

So Mr. Scorpion had to die? I'd probably do the same if he was in my yard, as my dogs and visiting children are higher on the food chain. But in the wild, scorpions are another of nature's wonders that we need to appreciate. They're not going to chase you down and kill you. I promise.

    P.S.
You were lucky to get to see him.

As for scorps the ones that can drop you are found in Florida, Texas, and pretty much the whole south. There are a few different scorpions in California and more species or variation of species in Southern California then is record. A stripe tail can pack a pretty good punch, by stripe tail im referring to 2-3 species of scorpion which are the most common here which have skinny pinchers and two stripes on their tail.

The General rule of thumb for scorpions when your not in Africa is the smaller the pincers the more potent their venom. (think about it it makes sense)

Bark Scorpion , Az and Southern US Native.. will and can drop you , if you go to the river shine a black light on those cabannas you bbq and drink under.. haha it can be scary how many you see light up

    Ca Native Stripe Tail

These aren't supposed to live here officially.. but do. There's alot of them in AZ
Tailless Whip Scorpion ... 100% Harmless has no telson... same as black claw ill buy you a beer ..

For as close as I live to the hills I've never seen one locally. I have seen around twenty in the Big Bear area during our many camping trips. I shake my boots upside down every morning up there. Nice photos Ricky

According to the pics, the only ones I've ever seen in the states is the Hairy and the Bark.

I used to live in san Dimas canyon. The cabin was infested with scorpions, like roachs.
Freaked me out. Would turn on the lights and they'd scatter.
