During the SHARE Poker Ride, I got cramps in both quads about 13 miles into a 17.5 miler while climbing Bumblebee. I stretched them and my calves and hammies at the top of that climb before going down Grasshopper. I then cramped later walking up the Villa Dam trail to get the car. I couldn't straighten out my legs or my quads would cramp. I was forced to just stand there or slowly shuffle. Near the top, the cramps subsided and it felt good to ride after that. For what it's worth, I never cramp while riding and was well hydrated (or so I thought), had consumed 2 gels and a cliff bar during the ride. So what gives? Electrolyte issue? Maybe I just rode harder with all the other riders around?

I have studied my years of cramping...and came to the conclusion that most of my cramping (especially during a race) is going too hard in the beginning. Ironically the times I didnt cramp was when I was not familiar with the course (I went slower because I didn't know where I was going). I kept the pace down in the beginning of the VQ and Traverse and it seemed to work.
