I moved up in class from Old Man Beginner to Old Man Sport. I really didn't want to ride 3 laps but since I got 3rd place last year, I had to move up. The course was shorter as they cut out a section after the first climb, but the single track through the Willows quickly turned to mud. Even the Pros were running their bikes through that section. Last year that was my recovery section. This year it took everything out of me, and then made the ride back to the starting line a slow pace while all the mud flew off.

Half way through the last lap, Dino stopped me and asked for a CO2 cartridge for another rider with a flat (not sure who it was). Dino took my picture, so hopefully he will post it this time (last year I didn't make the picture list :( )

Despite the mud it was a good time. It is going to be a challenge this year just to get a Glass. It was a little sad to go from the podium to last place, although I think I passed some riders with mechanicals).

The mud - lost both shoes once, single each time. Fun - Fun - Fun!!!

Big shout out to The Path for saving me with a rear tire! A last minute call to the shop before they left for the race, Neil grabbed the tire for me and Steve threw it on for me!

Kid made the whole 2 laps without walking - except for the lost shoes in the mud! Hubby even came out and gave it go.

Couldn't ask for a better night, beautiful weather, family riding bikes together, great friends....

One thing to remember if it was muddy for you, It was muddy for them! When I ask myself how I could do better In a DH race, I often find myself saying something about the track. For me to improve I then try to avoid those thoughts and think of other constructive ideas to help me be faster.

    Question!

Had you have known, Would different tires make a difference?

Do you have to pay for parking to race/spectate?

And are there photographers out there? This thread is kinda useless with out pictures guys!

ahahahahahahah - it was not that kind of mud, snow shoes maybe? Everyone had the same mud - made the next lap a bit tougher with the extra 5 lbs or so on the bike till it flung off.

Dino was too busy taking pictures to pass out margaritas on the second climb...so I'm sure there will be some soon.

I can say that I competed in the Over The Hump Mud Run! I got a chance to talk to Matt after the race, he said that they had to change the south end of the course (dry end) do to a huge bee hive that had taken over one of the trees. Thanks to Dino and Rodger for coming out and giving us those choice words of encouragement and that effing cowbell. Good times, see everyone next week!!

8th place out of 14! not even close to getting your ass kicked, good job out there!

Fun as usual, glad to meet everyone.

I finished at 14th, very happy about that. Goals are to train some more and get within the top 5.

I'm a solo rider tooling up San Juan Trail once a week, visit Noble Canyon now & then and ride Aliso Woods to stay in shape. Half the time I share the experience with a riding buddy.

And now for something COMPLETELY different...

So very happy to check "enter MTB race" off my bucket-list.

Not exactly zen and the art of MTB.

The mud at least made something interesting about the course... but I regret having cleaned my bike 4 hours before the race. Loved the mud really but foolish of me to worry about 4 grams of dirt on my drive train in advance.

Good job staging classes.... but kinda sucked hearing riders complain during bunch-ups about "when they mean mixed classes they weren't exaggerating" or "Last time I do THIS again" or "RACE LEADER GTFOOTW!"

Yeah it's a fun series so I don't feel bad for the pros.

As a first time racer I'd say that OTH was inviting, welcoming, and for 95% of the race I saw lots of great communication and etiquette. I didn't ruin anyone's race, and no one ruined mine.

I got a measure of how I stack up in a race environment.

I do not think it ignited an unholy passion in me for competing where I strive to do better.

I do not think it hampered my unholy passion to ride ride ride ride ride every chance I get, where I have no consideration about who is ahead of me and who is behind me.

I love MTB. I loved participating in the OTH race.

I got this cool number card I will hang in my garage.

I may wake up tomorrow feeling completely different... The race bug can bite with venom that takes a few days to sink in.

I may one day wear Latex. Or is it Spandex I don't know. I may one day borrow my friend's bike with no travel.

I may one day not just down some Gu, but do a blood transfusion in one of those supposedly abandoned RVs I drove past from my car to the starting line.

    Time will tell.

    Time will tell.
