Hey Simon...Looking up there from Palm Canyon side today and it looked real cloudy and ominous, but NOAA says no rain or snow and slightly warmer by Saturday.
What's reality? Looks like down to the mid-30's tonight:

I'll be at Rwanda Saturday in the morning for the 25m, then coming up for the rest of the weekend.

    Romona Trail Saturday Dusk Ride?
Was thinking about a dusk shuttle run down Romona Trail (by Thomas) if anyone is interested. I learned my lesson (again#-o) on Drakes SJT night-ride last weekend, so this one starts up by 4pm, riding by 5:30p. Anyone interested? Its about 30min to drive up and 45min to ride down (longer the bigger the group). I can take 3 bikes and 3 riders up, but need a retrieval car to take me back up after (one would want to have lights just in case).
[the non-carbon footprint way up would only take about 1 hr to climb, but after Rwanda I'll be footprinting]

This would essentially be the ride:
The first/lower option is Romona trail about 6 miles up the fireroad at the first camping area. If snow and time are not a factor, we could go up another 3m to the true Thomas Mountain put-in. Will be a game-day decision.
It's a fun trail. Has some chunky, but manageable stuff. I rode it last week and it was fast enough. Good views of the valley and Hurkey/San Jacinto peak. Its a classic area trail; can be multi-users so be respectful please.

Lots of rain today, so i hope the trail work held up. Cold all day but the sun came out about 6.00 pm. It's about 30 degrees right now and icy.

I'm down to shuttle Saturday evening and won't bring the Mini this time, so I can also take 3 bikes/3 people.

If not Saturday, then Sunday for sure.

I noticed that there are no drinking water outlets on the Hurkey Creek campground map. The Idyllwild Park map has drinking water outlets. Are there water outlet in the HC campground? Or do we have to carry in all of our own water?:-k

Campground does sell wood but expensive and fast burning pine.

I suggest buying wood from the ranch on Highway 76 on the way up. It is in the wash right hand side of the Highway 76/Florida Road near Hemet.. They sell it buy the wheelbarrow, be sure to get mostly oak and avocado costs more per wheelbarrow but will keep you much warmer. I think wheelbarrow are $20 for pine, $25 mixed soft and hardwood, and $30 for oak, fruit tress and eucalyptus. If cold you will need at least 1 wheelbarrow per night or go to bed early. Having a truck makes it much easier bringing up that much wood.

Here is my best guess where the ranch is they have a big sign out on the highway "Wood for Sale" hard to miss it. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&sou...12305&sspn=0.080105,0.164795&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=13

I never purchased by the wheelbarrow before, how big is the 'bundle'? I'll be coming in a semi-packed Nissan coupe and a wheelbarrow sounds too big for the passenger seat.

Could you drop your gear and go back for the wood after? It looks like it might be about a 15min drive? Just a thought.

Not a bundle, loose wood, I would guess a wheelbarrow would be about 4-5 of the bundles you see outside stores.

Thanks for the info. on the wood. I hope he's still there. You mentioned he might be shutting down last time we were there.
That place on Lincoln is gone now. Rats!

I hope they are there to. According to his wife, the Forest Service was giving him a bad time and accusing him of not paying for all the wood he was taking out of the National Forest. But says he has been cutting most of his wood off private property....the Forest Service was not believing his story and wants more money. They believe that it is not worth all the hard work if they have to pay the Forest Service the amount they want to charge him. The best wood he sells, avocado and eucalyptus most definitely comes off private ranch lands. That Forest Service bark beetle pine is not worth the time and work to cut, haul out and sell. It is too bad they should be giving that stuff away all it is going in the forest is creating a fire hazard.
