New race installed onto fork

Just bought a new fork but didn't get a race installed onto the steerer tube. Will any race work or does it need to be specific to the headset on the bike? I just had to get onto another fork and thought that replacing just the fork would do? The headset on the frame is just over a year old so I don't think IT needs to be replaced. How hard would it be to do in the garage? Or should I take it to a bike shop to have them put one on?

Looking forward to hearing what can be done hear. I can't wait to get a ride on them tomorrow. It will be an agonizing few hours if I have to wait for the LBS to open.

The race is specific to the headset. You can remove the old race by tapping it off while working around it with a screw driver. You can install the race to the new fork using the same method, but be careful not to nick it. Using a PVC pipe to tap it down works for me. If your worried about messing it up, just take it to your LBS and they'll put it on for a small fee.
