Not this again. We replaced ours often enough, but a little tattered looked good on a windy ridge. We constantly were loosing our mast. it would be replaced over and over again. The pole got thicker the base became concrete, in the end the pole was super stout, and we greased it to save the flag. It turns out the local park service was knocking it down, the last time jack-hammering the base out, Pretty dam sad. Now when I ride to the flag pole I stop and give thanks at that empty place that old glory flew since I started on the trail, and that was long ago. Somedays I think about putting another one up.

While I agree, there would be no USA flag if there were no Marines.

Same is also true about the Army, Navy, etc.

    New Flag at the Luge!!!

So we headed on up and replaced the flag today. The older Marine flag had seen better days and it was time for a new one.

The current flag was placed in Honor of CPL Jordan Stanton who was killed in Afghanistan. I was honored to retire the flag that flew for him.

Then we set up the new flag. It was a beautiful sight to see!!

Thank you to all who contributed!! We have a total of 6 contributors so far!! Thank you!!

This flag will hopefully be up for just a few weeks until the new canvas style flags are in. Then we can set up a larger group ride.

Thanks again Guys!! It's really great that we have some motivated and patriotic individuals in here.

The total of donations so far is $70. That is great!!

I have already spent 21.97 on a Nylon flag at the lovely Walmart in Foothill Ranch. That leaves $48.03 left which is plenty to order one canvas flag. We should have a little left over for the next one down the road too.

At this time, I don't think we need any more donations. Considering that the nylon unit will fly for a month or two and the new canvas flag will fly for another 5-6 months after that, I think we are set for a while. If anyone knows of another flag that is in need of retirement, we can try to get donations and replace that flag as well.

Next thought will be the group ride to fly the canvas flag. I'd like to get as many people together as possible so I propose Saturday, April 20th at 10am. It will be a nice warmup for the Rwanda ride. I know this is like herding cats but what do you guys think? I certainly want to include some of the ex- military in this community.

    See ya out there...

FlyinRide...I'm down 100% if you want to make group ride event to fly up the U.S flag. If you'd like to get as many people together as possible I can help you out to cross post the event to groups and biking community. April 20th/Saturday at 10am that would be perfect. Let me know!

Just a suggestion: What about on Memorial Day which is on May 27 this year and on a Monday? Most have it off. I'm sure the flag that's there now will last till then. That's when we used to it, Memorial Day and then again on Veteran's Day on Nov 11 which is 6 months later.
Besides the 4th of July, I can't think of any 2 other days more patriotic than these 2 days.

Btw, I used to buy the heavy duty flags at either True Value or Ace hardware stores. The cost about $35.00 for the 3x5 heavy duty canvas flags which is what we used in these pics:

    ^^^^^^^Simultaneous posting. . . .

I thought we had organized, group rides for Memorial Day and Veteran's Day (fitting days to swap out flags). I guess close to Earth Day (April 22) may work; however, Memorial Day would probably be ideal if the nylon one can make it to the end of May.
