Mountain Lion at Whiting

Why would let your kids play where carnivorous predators are confirmed to roam unabated? You didn't read about the kid down in Casper's? You don't believe they live all around us? I'm dumbfounded...

Gotta go with the Park Rules:

Dang it! I was planning to take my pets and unsupervised children in there today on my ATV for some shooting, smoking, drinking and wading! Already have a nice fire pit set up to warm up afterward. Crap. Gotta find something else to do today.

Your house in Santa Ana is also mountain lion habitat, how many of them you displaced when you moved there (or whoever developed the area in the first place). Lions live anywhere they got food sources like everything else. Whiting is just as much human habitat as any animals. Stop disassociating yourself from the animal kingdom. We are the alpha predators here and not some enlightened stewards of wilderness harmony. We hunted plenty of species to extinction including saber toothed tigers. If the lion can't handle himself against another male lion then oh well, shoulda studied more lion jiu jitsu. He's not hanging out where I mountain bike and take my kids hiking. Also these lions will kill you for fun. I'm sure some of you have cats. Ever see the cat kill a squirrel just for fun in spite of you giving it plenty of food. Well to a mountain lion you are a squirrel. Another thing. Animals learn. Bears in North Carolina's Smoky Mountain National Forest stay away from campsites because they kill bears that get near them and bears teach their young to avoid humans.

dstepper lived on ranches in Mendocino County forestlands most of his life. I have had weasels get into the henhouse and kill every chicken and duck I there. They where the source of my winter meals you can not count on the winter runs of salmon and steelhead. I have lost expensive sheep and cattle to lions and coyotes so I do not have a Disneyland mentality.

My apologies. I'll edit my post to remove any insults. Certainly don't have anything against anyone personally. Just this "Disneyland mentality" as dstepper phrases it is a bit off-putting.

Rode there Saturday morning. Not sure if thats the day they Mt. Lion was sited or if it was friday. But was having lots of chain problems that day. chain kept dropping. Glad my friends ditched me and left me alone. LOL.

I rode BlackStar last night. According to some hikers, they saw a mountain lion in the area of Hidden Valley.
Perhaps Mr. Kitty has moved on from Whiting Ranch.

That is not a lion it is a leopard.

Last time at SCST I saw a couple of cougars with that one there, I believe one was cleaning her with her tongue.

If I was out there with a toddler I would want a warning no matter who was called. I see kids running out front of their parents all the time.

I agree that a cat in a tree that no one has spotted is dangerous. Once he's been spotted it's game over. Predators want surprise not a bunch of tourists with cameras.

I warn adults anytime I see them letting their kids go out of immediate control, the danger includes lions, coyotes, and rattlesnakes.
