So the time has come to trade in the old for the new. I am looking at both the Pivot mach 6 and the ibis mojo hdr. i have demoed the mach 6 and really liked it. i have ridden the hdr but the frame was an xl (I normally ride a md) so i didnt quite get an accurate feel for it. I am torn between which frame to get, so this is where i ask for opinions and your .02 cents. So which bike and why? What is the better choice?

Very different geometry at any given size. The HDR is shorter in the cockpit. Seat angles are quite different if I am not mistaken as is head tube length (thus body position). Can't speak to ride quality. What do I know? I am a luddite who rides aluminum 26ers!

Similar to my thread, only not! Of the 2 choices in this thread I would go Mach 6 hands down. The geo is more modern and based on what I have read the HDR is not a true ground up developed 650b, "A poor attempt by Ibis at getting in on the latest" is just one of the many negatives I have read. Less travel and lack of tire clearance are also a few.

That's a good point. I liked the mach 6 everything about it but the only thing i am worried about is on the steeper climbs i noticed it wants to drift and lift. Not a huge deal breaker but if the mojo can handle the climbs due to its less slack of a head angle and still handle the dh as good as the mach 6 it may be the better option.

I doubt the HDR could even come close to the Mach 6 while descending. I am basing that on a demo I had on a 26" HD, I had a really high on the bike sketch feeling while heading downhill...I think any newer geo 5+ inch travel bike will have that wandering feel, especially if you are running a shortish stem & wider bars, you simply need to adapt.

Print pictures of both bikes, see which one your eyes keep staring at.:)

The Mach 6 is a far better frame.

Ibis makes a pretty crappy product for the money. I bought a Mojo HD a while back and it as the worst frame I have ever owned. Noting but problems and Ibis was terrible to work with. I sold it after a month. Lots of pedal bob and the rear shock would bottom out hard. Ibis told me the rear shock was wrong for the bike and it was a fox issue. Fox told me Ibis orders the rear shocks custom valved that way. I bought a new x-fusion HLR air rear shock and had the same issues of bottoming out but still having lots of pedal bob and no sag while running 300psi. The rear QR axle broke and broke the lower link twice. (Probably from bottoming out the frame.) Bought a Foes Shaver and problem solved. The Foes is also lighter and much stiffer as well. The Ibis had so much frame flex I was afraid to ride it hard.

I have rode the pivot and it is a much better bike.

Put your thumbs over your bars and put your chest down. Problem solved.

If you get the Pivot, slam your stem - that'll help too.
(Use no spacers under your stem to keep the bars lower and to compensate for the longer headtube).

And waiting for salespunk to chime in! :-k Having to run zero spacers under the stem due to a long HT is something I did not even consider. Noel has the Warden front end dialed with a short HT, gives the perfect aggressive riding position. Genius?

Interesting thoughts.
These are two of the three bikes I'm considering too.
Mach 6, HDR 650b and
the 3rd is the Norco Sight 7.1, aka; killer B

I currently own a pivot mach 5 and like it a lot, but want options.
My concern on the M6 is the same as the OP, about the climbing etc. slamming the stem as herzalot mentioned is a thought that could negate the concern.

Based on the Sight carbon just killing it in all recent reviews it would be hard to pass on, especially considering sexiness and cost.

I'd probably get the Pivot. I liked both bikes, but I'm actually putting in my order for something completely different since I like lighter bikes as I need all the help I can get on the ups.

Better late than never. If you are going 275 Mach 6 /thread. I would not consider the HD/R in 130 mode personally. It is too much of a compromise. Over built for the amount of travel although a lot of people ride them and like them. Just not my cup of cocoa.

If you just want a 155-160 bike there is more nuance, but I would still recommend the Mach 6. First off they absolutely nailed the suspension curve. It climbs really well and I have no problem on the steep loose climbs that I ride daily. This is with a 160 Pike and not the 150 that they show in the geometry numbers. It is a rocket on the descents as well. Really there is nothing it doesn't do well. Regarding the stem height and climbing, with both stems slammed the bars are significantly lower than my HDR. When I measured it was more than 1" difference. If you are not used to climbing a 6" bike that may be the difference. It climbs every bit as well as the HD.

So what is to dislike? First off the cable routing SUCKS! It has "internal" routing which means it goes inside the top tube for about 12" (BFD) so that they can put it in the marketing. What it really means is the cables rub on the front of the shock and the housing is not continuous. It is is a total PITA. Second it is not nearly as long as it looks on paper. They claim an effective seat tube angle of 71.5 but according to my measurement it is 66. If you run outside the "norms" of seat height this could be an issue. The reach is slightly longer than my HD, but not much. I am running the same stem length as my HD for comparison. Other than that I can't think of anything and neither should stop you from getting one.

I am not sure which one is faster because I only have about 5 rides on the M6 and have not gone back and ridden the HDR at all. From a company perspective Ibis is first class. I had to deal with them on three occasions (not bike flaws) and they were amazing both times. One last note is that MBA just posted a review of the M6 and said they have not ridden a better bike. Not a fan of their reviews, but this one I have to agree with and not just because I own one. For those that don't know I also have an Enduro 29 which was "Bike of the Year" for several sites and magazines, but my view was a little different.
