magic free hub

[El Rolo]

I have been running a set of mavic cross rides waiting for them to break for just over a year. they are still pretty straight but I was climbing out of the saddle and I heard a snap. Immediately after when coasting I hear a grinding sound on every rotation. same sound when peddling backwards.

i figure I need to replace the free hub. Has anyone had a similar problem with mavic free hubs? special tools required?

the mavic free hubs seem to have to be cleaned and rebuilt every year. there are no special tools for most of the mavic hubs, but i don't know about the crossrides, you may need cone wrenches like other hubs (some of the mavics come apart with just allen wrenches). be careful when you take the free hub body off as the tiny springs for the pawls will shoot out. clean it up, make sure there's no damage or metal in there; then relube and put back together. the best lube i've found for the mavic free hubs has been just all purpose oil that you can get at the hardware store. all the bike stuff was too thick and caused a lot of drag and had to be rebuilt sooner.
