7/21/11 – In an effort to encourage more people to ride their bikes than drive cars and do so safely, the Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved an ordinance prohibiting the harassment of bicyclists by making it unlawful to intentionally force or attempt to force a bicyclist from a roadway for purposes unrelated to public safety. After public hearings and testimony, the City of Los Angeles found that harassment of cyclists exists and existing criminal and civil laws did not effectively prevent the unlawful harassment of bicyclists because of their status as bicyclists.

Any person who violates the provisions of this ordinance will be liable for three times the actual damages with regard to each and every such violation, or $1,000, whichever is greater, and will be liable for reasonable attorneys' fees and costs of litigation. In addition, a jury or a court may award punitive damages where warranted
