I just started training for the Hermosa Tri(sprint) in Oct and did my 1st sprint this past weekend(we did the route that the Malibu Tri is doing on Sept 12)

I borrowed StevieB's Cannondale CAAD5 R900si cuz we are the same size....

One of the questions I have is there a big difference between a bike w/ 16 speeds compared to 24....his is 16 and it seemed perfectly good....

Is a bike w/ 24 have more granny type gears for serious climbs?

the answer is going to be yes because you will have a 3 x 8 set up. I think for tris you are better off going with a 2 x 9 set up because the sprint distances are rather short ie about 10-15 miles for the bike and they are relatively flat in what i have heard from others. if you go with a compact double crank set you should have the same gearing options as most standard tripples. But I would get the best your budget allows. Also get a bike with the 700c wheels the 650 wheels just look silly.

Also what was your time. Im looking into doing the bulldog tensile on oct 11th and one on dec 13th.

My time was completion (this was actually just a training event)...my friends timed themselves but we didn't talk about times....I was just happy to complete and NOT be dead....I did do way better then I expected(as far as being able to keep up and at points lead our group)

The tri is a great event. Be sure to post a report and have a great time.

Im not a tri guy but I always had the assumption tri bikes were typically more aero with flat riding type gearing and aero bars.

I couldn't ride that style of bike if I tried...too much pressure on my wrists from that geometry AND I am not doing this to be "Mr Super Tri guy" I'm doing this for fitness and fun w/ friends so this bike or another in the similar price range will do just fine for tri sprints....

The Tri bikes have a steeper seat tube angle and lower bar/stem ht to have the rider utilize his/her quads more during the ride since the running portion utilizes more of you quads....the bike I have posted I will use my quads a little more but thats ok w/ me

Having fun is whats its all about. Those bikes look uncomfortable ass he77 anyways. Good luck with your race {thumbup}
