Just a friendly reminder.... different folks have different comfort levels and different skill sets......What one person can blast through on a carbon hard tail might be a challenge for somebody else even on a 6+ inch bike. As far as full-face protection goes, all it takes is a bit of bad luck and/or lack of attention to have a close encounter with an immovable object.

Actually I think if your gonna get scars. Get em after you have tied the knot and are
married. I believe you will limit the probabilities of swooping up a trophy wife if
you are sporting scars. In my experience women who like bad boys with scars may
be fun to date but usually are not the kind you would want to marry
    or take home to mommy.#-o
So if you are going to get radical get the full face. I am with Den Mother on helmet selection.

You can say the same thing about stepping out of the house and driving to work. Living life in fear of the unknown is not living life at all.

I wear FF when I shuttle (or park riding, etc.), whatever the terrain. I wear regular when climbing. Even for the same trails.

Now that you mention it...I wonder how long it will be before people start wearing a helmet while driving. Think of how much you could do with the visor screen and integrated display features, beyond just safety. I could see it happening. Maybe I will be the first.

Welcome. You can get great deals on a site called chainlove. They always have the 661 helmets on there for around 80bucks and its a good helmet. How agressive are you planning on going? What trails are you planning on riding? Last but not least what bike are you planning to bomb down these trails on? The extra protection from armor is useful but it can be a a PITA to haul up the hill. Most of the time a full face helmet would be overkill. Wearing something like a fox flux should do the job for most "all mountain" riding.

Thank you all for your replies! I think I'm going to spend the extra money and buy a full face, to be sure

I'm mostly going to ride mountain/steep rocky trails, 'cause thats what we've got here. Knowing the area, I'm most probably going to be doing a little light downhill, as well as all-mountain, and I like a challenge, so I'll be trying out some technical stuff.
I'm going to ride a Merida One-Forty 800D, once it gets here

yup, we've got a lot of empty spaces (mountains mainly ) and forests, so many people like to ride their bikes, and downhilling's relatively popular here (one of the only mountain-filled countries in europe, with lots of unused ski resorts in the summer!).
I live in what we call the plateau, which is supposed to be the lowest, flattest part in switzerland, and we've still got some nice steep mountains. Smaller than the others, but full of tracks ;)

I love my fullface helmet, I'm a downhiller though. It has improved my riding by forcing me took look ahead, rather than down at my bike which is a bad idea when descending. That's about all I can contribute.

Buy one because you hate ER's. Buy one because you don't wanna be a burden to the other guys you're riding with when they have to carry you and your bike to the bottom of the hill. Buy one because you secretly hope it will somehow reduce the amount of insects you suck in come August & September when your gasping for air like a beached carp.

This is what I wear (because I love the look)...;-) View attachment 115353

I always try to go with Plan A, but always have back-up plans. Generally speaking, I'm mostly ready for all of the back-up plans. Really, if you do Plan A successfully, you won't need to go to the back-up plans.

    Plan A - don't crash.
Plan B - wear approproprate gear for the comfort level and risk that I plan on taking
Plan C - make sure I have good medical insurance.
Plan D - be ready for life to suddenly come to an end - really, it can happen, so be ready for it.

Is this on Rock it? I ride with a lot of gear on and I am typical riding zig zagged across rock it's rock garden riding pretty slow. One time someone told me its easier if I ride straight down With speed. My initial thought is that I know it is easier thats why I chose to do this, haha.

(i ride zig zagged looking for the nastiest line and work on balance and tech skills. At each "zig and zag" I try to move my body forward, grab front brake lifting my rear up and placing it down to start my next line. my goal for this is to be like those guys in that video where the guys are riding steep sections in the alps so smoothly and controled.)

Dont worry I ride with my ears open and immediately pull way off line when I hear people coming.
