    Hav - I'm riding a 48-16 right now, I rode a 50t for a couple weeks but didn't really like it.

Chewy - Did you ever get that Steam Roller that you were looking for?

I would love to do this ride again.. with brakes and a helmet.

been doing lots of fun on a kona paddy wagon...
upping it to 46-16 cuz 42 is too slow on the flats.

    great RPM/Cadence/pain machine.

I have done it several times both traveling north and south, riding solo, with one other and in a group. Remember, if you ride through Camp Pendleton ( instead of on the 5 frwy) be sure to bring your ID.
Its a great ride. For more of a challenge, ride up the road in Torrey Pines state park instead of the highway.

I'd be interested. If my wife is free, we'll ride our tandem and you all are welcome to sit in our cushy tandem draft all the way to SD. :)

Yeah, 50t is a pretty hefty gear. I'm jealous though that you can ride a 48-16. I've done a couple of 50 mi. rides on a 42-15 and I was definitely hurting on any little incline after around the 30-35 mile mark.

+1 for the paddy. I have an '08 myself.

Well, are we going to get this thing going? I'm good until the 25th of June as we have our triple that day. Jeff I'd follow your tandem anywhere!

A few of us did this ride today. Riding the 5 fwy is not nearly as bad as some think. Its even more fun when traffic was almost stopped. I've done it that way twice now and the shoulder of the freeway on that area is quite big enough to feel safe.

How fast do you guys ride thsi? I can get up to 17, but not sustained. I'd be more like 10-12, it might take me forever to get down there. I want to be able to do it by the Fall.

Don't know if you tracked your ride on GPS, but if yes, would you mind posting it?

I'm also curious about your pace on one of these rides. The other question I have is how do you get through the base? THey just let you on with ID and let you ride around? And if you can't get on base, I thought it was illegal to ride on the 5....not to mention sketchy as heck.

It is not illegal to ride on the highway if there is no other route. In this particular section, the shoulder is really wide.

yes. show id, and have a helmet. ride the road, follow the signs. Easy, but adds rolling hills and more miles. not really worth it.

they do have a store where you can buy food for cheap.

5 is direct, 10+ foot wide shoulder, and a million bike tracks on it.

    word.

just like the 101 through the central coast. no other route, its legal to ride.

It is truly fun to ride the freeway :)

I just did this ride on my fixed gear again for the second time. I got a flat not even one minute into the ride and in Newport we spotted Unigeezer which resulted in two of our guys crashing because they weren't paying attention... hahaa. We also got lost at the end trying to find our way to the train station. Good times.
