how big of a difference will 10 pounds make?

I pulled my Tracer (Vintage '99) out of the rafters and am getting it built back up. This is going to be my Counting Coupe rig. :bang:
But in the mean time I've been riding my Bullit in the Santa Ana's. Now doesn't that sound fun? haha

I expect the Tracer to be around 10 pounds lighter. Also will have clipless insted of flats. Oh, 2.1 instead of 2.5DH and a 100 mm fork.

So do you think it will be that noticable when I switch? I'm hoping so but I know it's more the rider and less the bike. I'm working on the rider part too.

Now if I'd just loose that 20 pounds off myself I'd be even better off. Hey, I'm working on it.

I have my Trek @ 36 ish pounds, and my Spec'd stumpy comp @ 21 - 22 pounds. there is a total difference.

the major difference to look at is the Headtube angle (that was my killer mistake @ turnbull)

The clipless are going to allow you to pull up the pedal and give you more torque there, and smaller tires with a lower rolling resistance are going feel faster.

As an example it took me an hour and forty five minuets to do the Loop on the Trek and just over an hour to do it on the Spec'd

As Pakiha said, the difference is huge on the climbs. My RFX is 35 and my Flux is 25. Climbing with the Flux is WAY easier. The weight is obvious but the geometry makes a big difference too. The RFX isn't bad but I wouldn't want to climb 8000' on it. Maybe training on a bigger bike will make you stronger but I think there's some benefit to training on the bike you'll ride. Gear combo's for each climb, suspension settings, etc.

For me the hardest adjustment from bigger to little bikes is getting used to skinny tires when it gets loose and sketchy.

lol, well if it makes you feel better my Brooklyn is the heaviest bike to ever go across the scale at Switchback.

Well I do like what I'm hearing for sure. The bullit is pretty slack and the front does get real light at just the wrong time. I can't wait to get on the Tracer for sure.

I'm waiting for new bearings for the rear hub and the new SRAM parts. I should have it rolling by the end of the week.

CalEpic, I'd love to get in on some of those rides. I work most weekends (both days too). My lights have been getting some use these days.

Haha, only 10lbs!!! That will be a huge difference! My 5 Spot weighs a hair over 30lbs and my Burner is a hair over 26lbs and there is a big difference when climbing. The Burner is much more snappy and I definately climb faster when riding that bike.

all you mention will be HUGE difference. Less slack geometry as well for climbing. as far as training on a heavier bike it does makes sense, but also think change in geometry may also work muscles a bit different. I got a HT and 5" bike and can feel difference a bit after riding one for a while then hitting other. Perhaps best is to build up bike you are going race. keep on big tires and load up camelback for training. when you strip down for race, it'll be noticeable enough

KidA, don't fool with me. This is no race to me. Just a quest to finish!
The rims are like pizza cutters. I don't think a larger tire would be happy.
My camelback is pretty loaded. But with over 40 miles to ride I can't think of one thing I'd take out.
