So i went for a ride this morning, and i discovered an odd problem.

I hit an incline on a concrete path, and kept in gear so i started pedaling hard (i.e. bike with no speeds). And it starts to slip. Every few seconds of hard pedaling it would almost feel like the chain popped off and i would almost slip off the pedals :-s

Nearly shredded the skin off shins if it wasn't for my crackhead-like reaction time

Any idea's or do i need to explain it better?

The bike is a bone stock 07 kona kikapu..

As far as I know, if it's a single speed there's on a couple of possibilities. Either your cog or chainring has worn or damaged teeth or you have a failing freehub.

Duc

I used too much grease on my rear hub several years ago, and I was getting some slippage, to the point where I couldn't ride out of where I was and had to walk about 4 miles. Got home took it apart, cleaned all the grease out, and sparingly reapplied, reassembled and all was good again.*

*this was a case of my maintenance, does not mean this is why it's happening to yours.
There's other possibilities/reasons

my jewels almost had an untimely meeting with my top tube this morning when i was climbing w/ my gear and for some dam reason the chain slipped off the middle ring!!!! scary as hell

Bent cog, old chain, out of adjustment but my first guess would be ...

a stripped hub, the prawls probably gave out. I used to do that to Shimano hubs ohhhh 4 or 5 times a year until I finally went with Hadleys and Kings.

I have had and seen this problem before. In my case and the other case too it was a worn middle ring. You can confirm this by inspecting the gear/teeth and comparing them to the big ring, if you even think it's worn it probably is. If your ride has more than 2 or 3 years of riding on it you probably should replace the middle ring.

Same happened to my buddy - worn teeth on the mid ring. It would only skip when you torqued on it hard.

When i'm really adding torque is when it slips, and the bike now has about 30 miles on it.

The possible problem sounds like something i don't have the knowledge/tools to fix.

I guess i will be taking it to the path for its first tune-up :bang:

Thanks everyone

Try taking a link out of the chain.

30 miles? This is a new bike amd I'm guessing experiencing cable stretch. Most likely jumping down a cog on the cassette.

If you have SRAM shifter/rear derailleur look at the right shifter - turn the barrel adjuster out ~ 3 or 4 clicks.

If you have Shimano, on the rear derailleur turn the barrell adjuster counterclockwise 3-4 clicks.

This will add tension to the cable.

Usually shops will tune new bikes for free after they've been ridden a little while if you're not comfortable doing it yourself.
