help needed!

Last thursday I read the news of someone who got hurt going don on rock it (his name is Ken and I hope he recovers soon).His helmet craked in two and he sustained a fractured on his skull. This made me realized that I really need to invest in a new helmet of far better quality in case anything ever happens(the one I currently have I spent 20 bucks on it).Anyway, what I need from you guys is your opinion on how to choose a good helmet. Any suggestion will be very much appreciate it.

Anything is better than nothing... $20 or not.... also test helmets for fit, dont look at price, but dont grab the most expensive one first... make sure it fits front to back and side to side... you dont want any pressure points this will cause pain when riding. also make sure it sits on your head and not on top of your head and make sure there is a LITTLE movement on your head but not flopping around.

Most have a adjustment in the back to snug it up. Play with this untill you get a good fit and its comfortable... for for fit first then look at the price... reason I say this is your brains worth 1000x what the price of a helmet is... More expensive ones dont fit better, but they typically have better cooling(more vents)

I have first hand experience in testing helmets in a crash and Im still here!!!
 
Whatever you do, go and try them on, do not buy online based on price, look or what people reccommend.

Buy what fits you the best and is comfortable.
 
ken was wearing a very good helmet from what i understand, a giro xen. correct me if i'm wrong, but these are very decent helmets, right? they're not cheap. he hit it just so as to crack it in half. i think the only way he could've prevented this (other than not riding at all) would've been to have had on a full face that was more durable, but by no means practical for this particular ride.

it looks like ansi & cpsc are the standards used for cycling helmets. look for these when buying your next helmet & you should be fine.

I have a Xen now and it is a great helmet.... I cracked my original helmet from front to back when I crashed.... to think that would of been my skull had I not been wearing one

Like I said, buy because of fit, not by price
 
Agreed - the Giro Xen is one of the best xc helmets out there. You've go to go full face to get more protection. Maybe helmet companies will build some models a little tougher, now that we're all riding 5 1/2" travel bikes on gnarlier stuff at higher speeds.
 
I hate to come off like a fanboy, but the MET Parachute is fairly light, and despite not being a full-blown full-face helmet, it's a lot more resilient than your face.

A few yards across the rocks will turn you ugly really fast, so for the sake of everyone who has to look at you, protect your mug.
 
I am in a market of a new helmet as well, I had a thread in regards to helmet which one to choose from?anyway last friday i was at my LBS tried some few helmets they have, i tried fox flux $99 they didnt fit right to me, tried bell variant didnt work, I tried the cheaper ones, univesal fit,,, it fits in my whole head! also i tried the GIRO xen, it fits perfectly, so my thought is buy a helmet that fit not how much is cost. I was after with the style and looks before but when i tried them.. i really got disappointed.

I'm the same as you the Giro Xen is about the only helmet that fits me well!!!
 
Also remeber that if you fall and take a significant blow to any helmet you NEED to replace it! Helmets should also be replaced every 2 years or so.
 
is a full face really that much hotter? Ive never worn one? I did play football and the helmet sucked for about 2 weeks then you just got used to it.

Rockit is my favorite trail but still scares the shit out of me (ive been riding 2 years) I think its the fear that makes it the most fun though. I would think full face would be good idea for that trail, but seems overkill for most of aliso especially climbing.

Also is viability an issue in the full face do you feel any less connected to nature wearing one, what about a kicker style football helmet just a bar to protect the jaw and some face protection. I havent seen anything like this though.

The Parachute breathes well and isn't very heavy, as opposed to a "real" full face helmet.

Overkill for easy trails? Start looking closely at all the old timers you see riding–look really close. You'll be shocked by how many facial scars and capped teeth you see. Ask them if they crashed on a super-difficult problem, or on some silly trail that was way under their limit.

Thank you Denmother, but I've tried that in the past but to no avail. No response after two tries. I love their MET Kaos. Plenty of UK sites have them, but to ship to you costs almost as much as the helmet.
 
I really like the fit of the Fox Flux, especially the rear coverage. I should of taken the plunge on a full face after my major accident that left me with a cracked helmet, broken sunglasses, split upper lip, and a skin free nose and chin. But nope I am not that bright and still wear a basic helmet. Guess i dont lean my lesson very easily. Two broken arms and I still look forward to climbing onto the bike every time.:bang:
