group ride etiquette and loose dirt

I am thinking about showing up for a group ride for the first time now that I feel in better shape to keep up with others.

So I am curious about etiquette particularly when riding downhill. I still ride like an 80 year old lady on steep downhills. Should I wait till everybody in the group has gone so as not to get in the way? Staying to the right and letting people pass seems like a proper thing to do, but then I may have to make a quick shift to avoid a big rut.

Been noticing more loose dirt on the Fully Loop. Heavy traffic is to blame I am sure, along with the dry climate. Makes uphill climbs more difficult and downhill rides dangerous. I am guessing that the condition won't improve until the rainy season.

theres always going to be someone in the way. weather its you or someone else. but youll find that theres more love going around then hissy fits. go on sundays and have fun.

Patience is golden

Just be polite, I yield for everything to avoid leaving a wake. Also rule is downhill always yields to uphill traffic, best to bring a bell, project tunes, or just have a really loud hub.

Don't worry about being too slow. There are plenty of re-groups on most rides. On group rides you'll get a feel for your place in the pack (fastest first, slowest last) It's not generally a good idea to pass going downhill unless there's a ton of room and both riders are communicating with each other where they're going. Show up for a ride and have some fun.

On group rides its to be expected. If you feel you might be in the way on the DH or on a climb, try to leave a gap. If it jams up, oh well. On every STR group ride for the most part it happens. You always get a "sorry"- followed by " no worries". Group rides are not a competition, its all about enjoying the bike and company. I can guarantee here, you also get pointers on things you can do diffrent if someone sees something to help your riding. Enjoy the ride is the number 1 rule here.
Oh and you may get a ribbing, but its all in good fun.

Have fun but be cautious and wear extra padding. Fullerton gets even more challenging when it's dusty.
