Morning of the race about 1.5 to 2hrs prior, eat two very large pancakes w/syrup, a couple pieces of melon, and a large glass of whole milk.
Why? because that is what a "friend" of mine told me to do years ago. I could have killed him when I got half way through my second lap. #-o
On a serious note, TRY and get a good sleep the night before, just concentrate on finishing and learning, if you find your self near the front of the pack when the finish line is in sight, go all out and try and take the win. Other wise just learn.
Biggest tip I think a new racer should know ...
Be prepared to leave for the race AT LEAST a day and a half before the race. Meaning, make sure the bike is in good mechanical order, have the gear you will wear ready to go, if using a bike rack have it on the vehicle the day before you will leave (pending security issues), any food you are bringing, have it ready made and ready to go the night before and keep the cooler next to the fridge (if needed). Have the directin to the course at hand, and most of all ...
DO NOT FORGET THE BIKE ( I have seen that happen a couple of time)
Enjoy.
