oh yeah, as far as the funding goes....
im a cal fire employee basically. but as a PCF i have to buy all my own uniforms. 90.00 SS shirts, 110.00 long sleeves, 95.00 pants, 430.00 wildland boots, 200.00 station boots, etc. my home station (39 in oak glen) is super low on money, we dont even have scba's that are compatible with our neighbors. what does that mean? it means if i go in a bomb of a house and run out of air, yucaipa's RIT cannot help me, short of pulling me out. no buddy breathing capabilities. i JUST got the new "large" fire shelter. everyone else has had theirs for months, and thats a piece of equipment that can make the difference between life and death. come to think of it, almost all of out equipment is that important.

This is completely unacceptable. Can we donate directly to your squad? I know this does not resolve the bigger issue but geez!

Article on firefighter overtime. Lots of facts and explanations, but the article does make it sound like all firefighters are making tons of money and it doesn't mention volunteers at all. Mentioning the median income by itself is misleading. It is like saying we all live in million dollar homes because the median is a million.

Going by the title, "Do rescue firefighters do a good job?" it seems the thread went a bit OT.
Up here the good folks that do a lot of the rescues in the hills, from what I have read/heard and even considered joining, are volunteers and most have full time jobs that they make a living at.

Should they be paid, sure if there is enough funds to do so but some are there because they WANT TO and others may just be gaining experience while waiting until they get the call to become full time firefighters.

no, not that i know of. but once a year we host a buffet with the oak glen search and rescue company. the firefighters and search and rescue and our families cook/wait on the people, and all the money is split up.
all FF's are trained in some sort of rescue. swift water, self, confined space, high and low angle, etc. i guess a "rescue" firefighter might be attached to a USAR team. rescue is just a part of the job and sometimes a specialization. i dont think there are rescue-only firefighters. then again, im only familiar with cal fire.
