I have a 07 Iron Horse Warrior 5.0 w/ the Tora 289 front fork.

I did the zip tie test and took it for a ride around the neighborhood(paved road, sidewalks and speed bumps). When I finished the ride, the zip tie was about 1 inch from the top...

Now I know I can adjust the preload setting, but I'm also under the impression that preload is for fine tuning only.

So my question is, do I need to swap coils or am I just not used to riding a bike w/ front suspension?

Have you set the sag? I would start there. Can you get 20-25% sag?

Sorry, thats what I meant by the zip tie. In normal riding stance, it compressed a good bit. I can't really set anything other than the preload, which, I'm told, shouldn't be turned more than 1-3 times. I've turned it 3 times and it still compresses a decent amount while in a riding stance.

It also felt very soft while riding in the above conditions.

If your in a normal riding position sitting in the saddle and your getting that much sag then yes you would need a stiffer spring. Just make sure your not bouncing. I sit on the bike use the wall to balance then once in a stable position push the zip tie down making sure it not higher then it should be then measure.

Rock Shox forks are pretty easy and straightforward to do spring changes on.

Basically you remove the large nut at the top, remove the small allen at the bottom of the fork leg, abd pull the spring assembly out of the top (rebas/lyriks etc is all i have experience with).

SRAM/Rockshox has their technical manuals on line showing how to do it. You should be able to swap it no prob
