It took me a bit to realize that this link is to support your efforts. I think it would help if you gave a little more to the story in your original post, or even titled your post something like Support Me in Tour de Cure.

And no, I don't consider this spam. Many people promote there cycling fundraising efforts here. The difference here is that they do it for others, whereas you're doing it to suport and organization that could save your own life. Good luck with your fund raising efforts.
 
Diabetes is a very difficult disease to live with. Because it is a familiar word, most people do not have an appreciation for the daily impact it has on your life. There have been many advances in the treatment but still the constant monitoring and the compromised health is quite a lifestyle. I have a friend who has type 2 and he has 8 injections a day, holidays are 1 slice of sugar free apple pie, and flu season is life and death. When he gets a cold he is down for 2 weeks on a death bed, where most of use can still go to work and get around with a cold. All that to say, your right it sucks and I hope you can get a lot of support for your ride. the ADA is a good organization. So keep beating the odds and have the best health you can on that day. Stay active, get good protein, and take care of that little guy you are holding in your photo.

I've had Type 1 Diabetes since I was 14 years old. They found it in a urine test for my football physical for my freshman year of highschool.
They stuck me in the hospital for two weeks to get me regulated. I was pretty pissed off! I didn't feel sick, what the heck did I need to miss two weeks of summer football for?
Through the years I raced bmx, played football, ran track, and wrestled.
I was recruited for track and football from Navy, and when they found out I was Diabeteic, they shut the door. YOU CAN'T PASS THE PHYSICAL!
After high school I applided to the LA Sheriffs Dept.
After filling out some paperwork, they saw that I was Type 1, and told me that I CAN'T PASS THE PHYSICAL!

Those are the only two things in my life that Diabetes has kept me from doing!

I'm 43 now!

I do hard, manual physical labor, on graveyard, every night for a living.

I ride mountain bikes.....HARD!

I happily married, with three kids.

One, my boy JAKE, also has Type 1 Diabetes.
He's 14 now, and he's had it since he was 10.

When he was first diagnosed, my friends and family would tell me how sorry they were to hear about Jake.
I would tell them, "please don't be sorry, there are much worse things he could be diagnosed with".

Like cancer.

I tell Jake that if he takes care of himself, he will live a longer healthier life, than most of his friends.

We did the Tour De Cure every year, for the fist three years that he had it. We're missing it this year because I'm already racing in Oregon on the same weekend as the local Tour in Long Beach.

I guess what I'm trying to get accross is this......

No, it's not easy.

Contol your Diabetes, don't let it control YOU! :clap:

Thanks Innes and Maxwell! I have had type 1 diabetes since I was 19. I'm now 34. I can honestly say that mountain biking has saved my life. It is the one way that I keep my blood sugar level in check. Most diabetics don't have the luxury of riding (or exercising) as much as others or have a harder time controlling their blood sugars. Efforts like this will definitely push us closer to a cure (and stop the money making machine behind not curing it!) Sorry had to throw that in there.

Innes I'll definitely throw some $$$ towards your effort. Thanks for doing it!!!!!:clap:
 
I can personally say that maxwell rides with no limitations. He's a stronger and more fit rider than probably at least 98% of the riders on this board (that doesn't even include his incredible riding skills). Right on!

Although I am sorry to hear that many of you have huge life challenges, I really like hearing how some of you overcome them. Maxwell, knowing about your diabetes, you're even more my hero! :clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:

My older son just turned 12 in March, he was diagnosed with type 1 when he was 3. It has been 3 shots a day since. He is very active, and an awesome student. At times, yes it is difficult...flu season sucks. But it is something we work together on, and hopefully someday there wil be a cure so others don't have to go through this.
To the OP, its not SPAM, its good stuff, and thanks for doing what you are doing.

My dad suffers from Type 2 diabetes. As a result of the disease and some negligence on his part with respect to his diet, he suffered a heart attack in 97. After several scary incidents that required hospitaliztion , he seems to have everything in check right now. Being an absolute health and fitness freak, I do, however, get a little frustrated with his often blase attitude towards his health sometimes.

Innes, seeing that I blew half of my bonus money at The Path yesterday on a new Mach V, helping you out a bit is the least I can do.

Darin.........thanks for sharing your story. You're living proof that if you have a fantastic attitude and have control of the disease, you can live life to its fullest. You and your kids are awesome! BTW......I still want to hit up a morning ride with you. I've been doing some temp work but once that ends, I'll have a few weeks to ride everyday before the work grind begins!

firmly agree but the part that is missing here is that no one, and I mean no one has a bad thng to say about Darin. :-k;)

While I can only aspire to be the rider he is I am more impressed with his respect and support for all his kids.

From what I have seen from afar he is year in and year out the dad of the year. :bang::clap:

I've throu-hiked the John Muir Trial, rode my bike across the U.S. (unsupported, Cali to Florida), and I just had my first baby......

.....and yep, I'm a Type I as well.
