cover for when removing gear indicators on shimano shifters

What do you do if you decide to remove the gear indicator from your shifters? Do they make a cover?

Why wouldn't clear silicone (or any color for that matter) work? I know it would work better then tape.

I don't think many of us use our indicators anymore, I know I don't look at mine when I shift, and the XO SRAM Triggers don't even come with them.

I guess shifting has become second-nature by now to some of us vets.

I rarely look at mine, so I know what you mean. I guess it's still helpful to check and see what gear you're in from time to time to me. But, that doesn't mean I'm checking out my indicators all the time when I'm riding.

However, I still don't get why you'd actually want to remove them. I can understand not needing to look at them. I can also see that some shifters might not come with indicators. But, if you have them, why remove them? Were they broken?

I'd like to move my accessories closer to the shifters. Plus, when I make the jump to 9 speed and disc brakes, I plan on running M952 pods with whatever levers come with the brakes I go with. Instead of a single integrated shifter clamp, there will now be two clamps (shifter & lever). I have an OS bar and there is limited smaller diameter bar to hang the levers, shifters, bell, and computer on. The gear indicators waste one inch of bar and are a solution to a non-existant problem. I can see their value on low-end components when a bike with more than one gear might overload the brain of a Huffy rider, but indicators on XTR is just plain silly.

DH'ers remove them all the time because they break off if there's a crash.

I shattered my old LX shifter in Arizona of a crash. The only thing left was the orane indicator and it shifted fine for the next 3 days of riding:bang:

Why dont you fab up a little piece of alum., it wouldn't take more then 30 minutes total. Just make a template out of cardboard, you can cut the thin sheetmetal with a dremel like butter. Then just mark the holes to drill for the existing bolt holes and screw it in. It would look totally stock, like it was supposed to be there and wouldn't look as cheesey as a sticker or tape. Just an idea...

suggest keep it ghetto and exposed - if anything maybe just some duct tape!

Personally running XO's on one of my rigs so no indicators and usually not an issue but sometimes would love to have it there. Other bike has XTR and like em jus the same
