car problem: wheels vibrate while braking

Perhaps you misinterpreted what I wrote. The discs aren't turned until they meet the minimum specifications. They are turned only enough to remove the irregularity. Discs can be turned as many times as required until the disc meets the minimum thickness.

Any technician worth his salt can measure the irregularity and calculate what the disc thickness will be after the disc is turned - they do this all the time.

No tech wants to spend the time to turn a disc only to find that it's beyond the service limit, then requiring him to replace the disc. That's two jobs, and the tech only gets paid for one.
 
I'd tend to take Lee's advice as he actually works for Honda and you're driving a Pilot :wave:

I've been in cars for as long as I've been alive and have never seen a warped rotor, expecially on a passenger vehicle like yours.

rotors and pads have a bad relationship.. as the pad wears from stopping your car, it grinds into your rotor because they dont wear perfectly. Those grooves eventually lead to the shaking your feeling. I've had it on every car I've ever owned.

The rotor will warp if they are too thin (from being turned too many times and are past the safe limit) and experience too much heat. Your average laymen will almost certainly never expereince a warped rotor.


1. Have pads changed and rotors turned.
2. Report back.
 
If you take it to a Honda dealer, you won't need to ask - that's all they use. It's a hit and miss at independent repair facilities.
We have an on car, and I hate that effin thing...... More of a pain in the ass than its worth.... We have a pair of nice ammco's that work wonders, specially with the adapters we have.... I have used the cup and cone setup in a long ass time, we have the cool selfcentering ratcheting deal that was about 6 bills. Only time we cant use that is on bering type hubs, which we have a full compliment of mounts for...... Im also very picky about keeping up with everything as well.

I use the On car, specialy when dealing with some of GM's new crap that doesnt have a friggen mount hole in the hub.



If the vibration is still new, try doing a few hard decelerations (don't come to a stop) from 50ish to 10. The warping of a rotor isn't usually from an out of true rotor, but rather uneven brake deposits on the rotor from the transfer layer between the pad and rotor. The hard decelerations induce heat into the transfer layer may be able to break down the old and create a new even layer.
If this doesnt work, pepboys can machine down the rotors for $10 each.
Not sure what build up layer your talking about, never even heard of that before, once a rotor is warped its warped... there is no way a few hard stops will make a warp go away. If your getting build up on the rotor between the pads..... Something is seriously wrong.



warped rotors actually have a single main cause.......... Its a simple one...... most people dont realize it..... Lee can back me up on this.....

Specially on the new sealed hub systems with zero freepaly in the bearings... Youll feel every little bit of warp in the rotor, now with the older bearing system were the hub and rotor were one peice, you would be allowed a certain freeplay in the bearing that would such up alot of that vibration.

When you have an uneven clamping force on the rotor, then heat it, it will follow that uneven force, you end up with a warped rotor.



go get some american , japanese or canadian made rotors and some ceramic pads and put them on its very simple. these rotors are floating....no need for a overpriced dealer. turning rotors is a thing of the past anymore since rotors are so inexpensive now.people get nailed for brake jobs all day long i would hate to see that happen to you:) good luck if you need any help pm me i will lend you a hand and the tools if needed:beer:


Yes, most brake jobs are pretty simple, but something to remember, those rotors even though cheaply built, are still designed to run a specific type of pad. Not all rotors can work properly with ceramic pads. Organic, Semi metallic, carbon, and Ceramic all have a different heat range were they work properly....... Unless you have modified the braking system to work in a different heat range than what was factory...ALWAYS USE THE ORIGINAL TYPE.......





Bottom line is, Ill give it a 99 percent odds that this is indeed warped rotors, if the car was in my shop I would be checking there first, but as a sure measure I would also check balance as well just to be sure...... Its not very often I find it more, and we do a shit load of brakes at my shop. What lee was saying about rotor thickness and proper machining is dead on..... If I am doing a brake job that has zero complaint of vibration, I already know I will be using up .020 of an inch to get a proper cut and surface RA for the brake job.... When I measure the rotor to begins with I take this into account on my inspection.... Your first fast cut which makes the rotor even, will take .006 off each side, and the fnish cut which will be slower, and provide a proper RA will take .004 of each side then a proper hone to eliminate the sawtooth effect the lathe leaves on the rotor. Now if its warped there is a little mroe involved in that math to make sure you have enought o make the rotor straight and true and still stay above your Minimum machine<Not to be confused with discard.... very different numbers> As long as your are above theminimum machine, your going to be ok with rotor heat dissapation.

There is a little more to turning a rotor than just sticking it on the lathe, a proper cut will provide an even surface, and the proper RA< think surface friction> for the type of pad that is being used on the vehicle. I actually have the tool that checks this, its pretty neat tells me how rough a rotor surface is.......


Its more than just replace the rotors and pads and go for a proper brake job. Even new rotors are usually already warped because some jackass stock boy decided he could say room by standing them on end for storage, or the shelf they are being kept on is an old ass sagging wooden shelf which both will induce a warp without heating the rotor up......


I could go on for days about different things that cause problems, bottom line is, a good tech<not a mechanic> knows the proper steps involved in a good brake job. Overall your looking for stopping power, proper modulation, no noise, and longevity for a minimum of 12k miles post brake service, preferably longer. If the job is done proplery, there is no reason why< unless driver is a jackass> the brakes shouldnt be going far longer than 12K without making noise, and still maintain proper braking without warping the rotors.


Aftermarket or factory pads dont make that much of a difference unless your using shitty 12 dollar pads from AZ or Kragen...... Get a good pad, My current favorite is Centric, I used to keep our shelves stocked with wagner, but seems about eight months or so ago, there mix went to shit, and every set we were installing was getting less than a K before making just terrible noise..... Centric makes a great product, and without telling you all teh reasons why they work well.... let me just say this......... I dont care if a pad is prescorched, and reads it needs no break in period..... Your rotor still needs a break in period to match up to the pad..... So be nice to your brakes after a brake service, new brakes make more heat than those that are broken in..... Let the two mating surfaces hone themselves a bit before you go stomping on them super hard....... Nothing like an overheated rotor right off the bat on brand new brakes.

I'm surprised how much interest there was in this topic. My cheapskate summary is that I don't need to do anything immediately, but I'll plan on getting a major brake job at a Honda dealer the next time an oil change is due.

Serious, I know Lee is great and he came from Honda, but on a very serious note, the guys at the dealerships doing the brake jobs<no offense meant to anyone working at the dealership, its obviously a general statement, not a rule either> Have less training than one would expect.

YOu can get the same quality brake job elsewere for cheaper. Not that the dealership is going to do bad work, just your going to get nickle and dimed to hell and back........

Hate to say it, but its true.... I am litterally amazed at some of the shit I see written up for the itemized list from the dealership....... Since we are talking about Honda's Ill start there...... Honda dealership in Loma Linda... litterally told a customer they had to change the oil twice on her car.... this is how it was printed ON HER WORK ORDER..... you MUST change your oil twice, once to flush it, once to fill it, if you do not your car will explode into outerspace........... This is not bullshit, I didnt belive my eyes when I read the work order.

Toyota, customer took there truck in to the dealer for a 60K service.... Came to us and asked if we could help him figure why it was 500ish dollars..... we went through the list of what all was involved with the 60K...... It was all small inspections that were individually charged.............. Shitty part about it... it was all stuff we covered for a 49 dollar charge......


Ok Ok, I could go on with horror stories for days here....









And I didnt call anyone a jackass..... I just rambled for awhile...
 
Rotor turning is a waste of your time and money which is why Dealerships LOVE it. Dealerships sell on car rotor turning as this vital service because it's a high labor low investment (after purchasing the Pro Cut machine) setup for them. They make WAY more money turning rotors than they do replacing them. Vehicle manufacturers don't turn the rotors of new cars after they install them (nice try Lee) what makes people think it's necessary on replacements? Get a nice set of DBA or similar quality rotors and you'll be fine.

The comments about going to a dealer are correct but not useful. I know the skill of the person doing the work is more important than anything else. But since I don't know any local mechanics I am better off going to a dealer. This is a problem for everyone in the trades these days. Having real expertise is not as important for getting new business as having a fancy website or a coupon. Also, companies would rather hire cheap labor than smart and highly trained labor. It is always a crap shoot unless you know the background of the person doing the actual work.

For the people who say I should just do it myself: I don't have the tools and can't do maintenance in my apartment parking lot. I also don't know what I'm doing. The people who say it is easy don't realize how much skill they have. It is easy enough to follow along in the manual (which I don't have either) but unexpected stuff always pops up and you end up needing a tool you don't have and you can't drive to the store because by this point the car only has 3 functioning wheels. Also, I'm lazy and don't mind paying for stuff if it is done properly.

As far as dealers making more money from turning rotors instead of just selling me new ones: If turning the rotors gives me good results and is cheaper (for me) than new rotors it doesn't bother me at all that the dealer makes more profit from turning the rotors.

That couldnt be more wrong...... Rotors are Friggen CHEAP and FAST. EVERY shop makes WAY more money selling rotors than they do turning rotors..... Think about it like this, first off just like a Bike shiop, most everything is keystone pricing.... meaning double what we pay, but also just like the bike shop, some items are ALOT more than keystone.... new rotors are Bread and butter for every shop out there.

Ok follow me here, this is going to make great sense here.

Standard brake job
1, inspect
2, remove brakes
3, remove rotors for turning
4, turn rotors< half hourish maybe a little more>
5, reinstall rotors
6, reinstall brakes
7, mount tires and test drive

Brake job with new rotors
1, inspect, rec repairs
2, remove brakes
3, remove and replace rotors< less then five minutes>
4, replace brakes
5, mount tires and test drive

First and foremost, new rotors saves us techs time.... and a fair amount of it, and for us time is money. Second part is...... rotors get marked up.... ALOT!!! Most of what people have come to call a floating rotor<means the rotor slide off the hub during the tear down instead of being either part of the hub, or being bolts to the back of the hub> cost for the aftermarkter less then 20 dollars each... usually less than fifteen...... Whats the going sale price for rotors???? ready for this..... Im going to break the retail code of selling here....... usually 60 plus each.... Yeah thats right, rotors are normally trippled or higher from the original cost.


Trust me, the auto feild makes a shitload more money on selling rotors vs turning them. All that and I still didnt figure in the cost of maintaining and operating the lathe.

I know this might sound crazy but people will modifiy anything these days, so he might want to look for some take-offs for cheap.

I know for my mustang, I can goto Saleen/Steeda/Brenspeed etc.. and get takeoffs (99% new rotors that were taken off because of big brake upgrades or someone wanted slotted/crossdrilled rotors). The takeoffs for my car last time I checked was 45$ for one axle (2).

I still think he just needs pads and rotors turned.

no its not crazy, you see that alot. Mustangs and Camaros have a shitload of aftermarket parts such as larger braking systems, suspension mods. I would be willing to bet crossdrilled are available somewere, but they wont be cheap. Larger systems for this I would be suprised to find, mainly because its a system that youll have a need for a larger wheel as well to be able to fit it, and those usually dont have many comopanies willing to make up a system that will sit on the shelf for a long time.

it is possible there may be something else, but the likelyhood of that is pretty damn low. Its a quick check to verify for any tech that is half worth a damn to know for sure..... which if you go in asking for brakes they should be checking reguardless.
