Results will be used for bikeway master plan

CITY HALL — More than half of those riding bicycles during the week in Glendale don’t use a helmet, and about a third ride on the sidewalk, according to a recent citywide survey of cyclists and pedestrians.

While bicyclists tend to be safer on the weekend — just 25% go without a helmet and only 18% ride on sidewalks — the findings of the first-ever count underscore the importance of Glendale’s upcoming master plan for bikeway and pedestrian corridor improvements, officials said.

“We know in the city we’ve had a problem with people understanding the safest way to get from Point A to Point B, but it’s good we are understanding these issues so we can tailor education efforts,” said Councilwoman Laura Friedman, who frequently bikes to City Hall.

Not surprised that people ride on the sidewalk. I lived in Los Feliz and there was no way I would risk life and limb and ride on the road on Los Feliz Blvd or Riverside Drive.
