i hope the gorgeous blue pit found a home!

i have a friend looking for 1 or 2 dogs that are GREAT w/kids (they have 3 y.o. & 5 y.o.) & hopefully already potty trained (maybe a young adult dog?). they have a huge yard, well, 2 of them, not including the front yard & a pool (maybe they'll get to swim, too?).

let me know if anyone knows of any well behaved & child friendly pooches!

yes, we already checked craigslist & still looking, too! :)

SPCA or local pound.....there are thousands of loving kid friendly dogs that would LOVE a new family....
 
tks, but they want to know the history & see the pooch(es) in their element. you never know what you're getting from the pound. best to get puppies if one goes that route, so then the character shaping is up to you!

I actually partially disagree..I see your point BUT my family has rescued many dogs from the pound and has had no problems...there are also breed specific rescues too...
 
my dog was from the pound, but wanting specifically a lab/pit mix, i was ONLY willing to take home a pup. i would never take a bully breed home that i did not know its background. too many owners are irresponsible & often don't provide the proper guidance to these special breeds. i'm not taking on the chance of liability from taking home a strange dog. i'm not saying all are liabilities, but that is a huge chance that neither i nor my friend are willing to take.

yes, we will check w/rescues as well. i don't know if a dog in a foster home for a period of time will be good enough to 'know its personality' or if they want a longer history. that is up to them. of course there are dogs that do have known histories in foster care. they might get lucky!

I would recommend rescues. THey put the dogs in foster homes first, so that you get a better picture of how they will act when you actually bring them home.

Sadly, I have not had good luck with either. I have gotten numerous dogs from the pound and rescue associations and every single one had some sort of behavioral problem(s) (that were not disclosed) and ended up not being retrainable (in the short term). I had to either return or find other homes for all of them.
 
I'm sorry I missed they were looking for a pit or pit mix...yes totally agree w/ getting a puppy....if they want a full breed w/ good lines....have them check out Ultimatepits.com
 
no, _I_ was looking for a pit/lab mix when i adopted my akemi. i don't believe my friends have a specific breed in mind; however, they may have specific breeds that they want to avoid, such as the bully breeds, but i'm not positive. i will have to ask!

Older Pappillon needs a new home

I got a fixed male papillon my wife wants out.
Appears to be purebreed, but no papers as he was a rescue.
He's probably at least 10 years old, but still runs around actively although he is showing some grey. He's well behaved, but won't sit still to be pet. He'd rather walk away. He's fine with my 2.5 year old and responds to name calling and hissing.
He's fine with other dogs as long as they don't try to wrestle with him.
He has snapped occasionally but never hard enough to break skin. Probably traumatized by the hot spots.
He hates baths and lately will squirm if you try to brush his teeth. Brushing is also a chore because he'll keep yelping and snapping at the brush.

He's housebroken and gets walked 2x a day. He's an indoor dog and stays home for 10 hours while my wife and I work. He's currently wearing a cone collar while a hotspot on is butt heals. he bit himself pretty raw a few days ago. He seems to get these every summer and I'm about to shave him to prevent a reoccurance.

As far as dogs go, he's a good one, I can walk him without a leash, but he doesn't like to play, and is not a lap dog.

When we have our second kid, he's gone one way or another.
Hopefully to another home and not a shelter.

"As many of you know, we are moving in just 2 weeks. Unfortunately, I have still not been able to find a good home for Cookie and Coco . We're not able to take our beloved doggies with us and I've been desperately trying to find a home for both of them 'together'. They were raised together and pine without each other. The Lab rescue have already said that they would probably separate them, so this is my last resort.
Recently I tried to take Coco out in my car alone and she TOTALLY refused to even get into the car without Cookie.....!!!! She absolutely pulled back on her haunches until Cookie was by her side. Both doggies are in great health, have been spayed and have ID chips implanted under the skin.
Cookie turned 3 December 10th and Coco will be 3 April 1st. Cookie is my mellow-yellow, and just loves her tummy rubbed. Coco is adorably funny and lives for her "ball." She also loves the water..... Cookie loves lots of attention. Both doggies are loyal and love to walk. They have been raised with my 3 kids running around all over the place, and have survived Sammy's constant hugging and love of 'dress-up', so they are fantastic family dogs. This is by far one of the most difficult decisions I have ever had to make, but under the circumstances I have no choice.
Please, please forward these pics to all your friends. I want to find a great home for these fabulous doggies. They are just adorable and it's heartbreaking to let them go. In a perfect world, I hope that we could find someone local so that we can still keep in touch and visit them.I pray that someone, somewhere can help us keep Cookie and Coco together, and love them just as much as we do.Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.[email protected]

<sigh> my gf & her hubby have decided to put doggie hunting on hold until they mod their yard a bit more (they just moved into a new home). they were willing to take coco & cookie if they needed a home NOW, but since they've been placed, my friends are going to wait, so she says.

tks to everyone for the info! i may post again when they're ready & who knows? maybe there will be more doggies that need homes!

I went to a dog park where they had a adoption/rescue show.

We inquired about a husky that we loved.

The lady who was the recue person wouldnt talk to us once she found out that we both worked and had to leave the dog alone for a better part of 8 hours.

I mean.. not everyone has no life and stays at home rescueing dogs all the time as a job. Kinda turned me off to rescue animals. The attitude the people at the show gave us was not nice.

I've had animals all my life... 2 German Sheppards, 1 Collie, 2 cockers, 4 boarder collies, 2 beagles, 8 horses, 1 Mule Deer, chickens and some pigs and a small herd of cattle and a33loads of cats that people dropped off on our back road all the time (at one time close to 30). So I would think I know a few things about keeping animals and keeping them happy and healthy. (all lived happy healthy lives and/or are still alive today). My parents still have the bulk of the list at our ranch in colorado.

Can you tell how mad I was with the dog people at the rescue event in Northridge at the dog park??

I have to convince my apt manager to allow us to have a dog as my 4yr old would love a dog and we would like the company/fun of having another one.

Also I think Mark And Brian 95.5KLOS are having a dog/pet adoption event so you can check the website.
 
I used to think this until I got my Belgian Malinois puppy. He was not socialized well and he is around 9 months now and is still terrified of strangers. We decided to adopt an older dog that could possibly mentor him, or just help him calm down.

We went to a German Shepherd rescue and were specifically looking for a very stable and people friendly female. We talked to a few of the foster parents and found one that met our criteria perfectly. It is very important to ask the right questions.

When people see our two dogs, they always think our puppy is the pound/rescue dog. They can't believe that our female is actually the rescue because she'll just run up to strangers and lick them to death. We even had a little kid run up to her and wrap his arms around her. Gave me quite a scare because I had only had her for a month. Nothing fazes her. She walked well on a leash, housebroken, and knew basic commands already. It's amazing that the rescue actually got her from the pound where she was deemed unadoptable and she was found as a stray. Go figure.
