29er Wheelset that won't break the bank

I'm looking to experiment with monstercrossing my Surly 1x1. Can you guys recommend some 29ers wheels that won't break the bank? I did a test fit with my road wheels and some 700x42 tires and it was pretty rad but I had to brake by putting my foot on the front tire.

I was thinking of just using my road wheels and getting rim brakes but I'd need to buy some adapters for the brake posts.. with the 29er wheel, I could go with disc brakes.

I'm not sure exactly what your looking for... I bought some really cheap 29er wheels a few months ago for my single speed...
Handspun Wheels with SRAM 406 hubs and WTB SpeedDisc rims. I paid about $170 for the set. My expectations were pretty low, but these wheels are fantastic. Very well built, perfectly true out of the box, and they have held up to single-speed/full-rigid abuse. The 406 hubs are just fine for what I needed. The wheels are not light, but not too heavy either.
I don't think Handspun makes this spec anymore, but they appear to be a good source for decent wheels at the low-end of the price-range.

I bought a set of Vuelta road wheels from this Ebay seller (Bike Island) about two years ago. No complaints. Very good wheels for the money, I've had no problems.

I like these because when the freehub takes a dump (which they all do) you can actually find a replacement for a shimano hub.

These are actually pretty good, I bought a pair when I got back in mountain biking over a year and half ago. I put them through their paces abusing them with my rookies mistakes. I've only had the rear trued and stress relieved once(all they've ever needed), and now have been relegated to a Karate Monkey child-towing rig. They are a tad heavy but you get durability in exchange.

I recently put 700c wheels on an old 26" frame using a Mavic Brake Adjuster that I ordered through The Path. Real simple solution and so far its been working out great.

Adjuster simply bolts into the brake posts and allows you to mount your brakes higher on the frame.

Voila!

How much did your adaptors cost and I think there's a limit to the size of tires.

I found some SRAM 406 laced to WTB FX28 rims for around $100... I hope.

I believe they ran about $26 each. My tires are 700x30 and looks like there's a bit more room for a larger tire but it'll be tight.

Thanks for the info. I want to run some larger ones and the Xtracycle adaptor, $40 each, can fit 700x44.
