Um, sucks for 29er riders I guess. #-o It's not like we can put on 2.5 tires and then 1.95 tires.

Would be nice to have a lighter wheelset available for XC and then something that could handle a DH course for that.

I guess I know for next time... :-s

But 29ers have other advantages that a slightly smaller difference in tire size would help offset... better traction, better rolling, etc.

That was my understanding, but I'll check again with the organizers. I'd like to change pedals as well.

I talked with Jason Smith (race organizer) yesterday. He says:

Sport and beginner riders will need to purchase a one-day license (he thought it would be about $5).

Expert and pro riders need to have a USAC license. (Guess I have to lay down the dough this week).

Also, just to clarify (we were talking about this at Fontana)...the ST is 15 minutes long.

I'll be putting on 2.35" for the DH...I don't think my frame can accomodate a 2.5" either.

Come to think of it though...if I can rock it down Silverado and Trabuco with 2.1" tires...:-k:-k

Not getting into a discussion on the first point, but thanks for checking on pedals. I also would prefer flats on a DH course I think.

May as well.. if there's any pedaling you and I will be faster than anyone with a 2.5 tire :)

BTW, what class do you have to race then?

    Well, that's the interesting part...

Jason told me I am the first person to bring up the expert/sport dilemma. (I am USAC expert for DH...but sport for XC). He said he'd have to call the race official and get back to me.

Oh man... I still say tie goes to the runner. Two XC events and only one DH event.

    :?:

It's not like you race USAC XC events often either, right? Hopefully it'll work out.

Joy said she had an expert license for XC but wanted to race Sport also (she isn't doing the stage race, though). I told her it was only 18 minutes more!!

    Oh, one more thing...

he said that the DH is a two-run format BUT they are going to use two different courses...

Not sure what you mean by "tie goes to the runner"...

Yeah I saw that on the site. Should be interesting! One is more of a fire road and the other is the rock garden.

That would mean I could run a Reba for the DH and then back to rigid for the ST and XC:bang:

No, apparently you are only allowed to change your tires and tubes.

I think if they are doing that they should totally lessen the weight allowance. Why allow for a massive tire/tube swap but nothing else, especially at that much weight??

    Oh well. Not my race!

I'll probably just run Rampages/Captains and not change a damn thing.

For those of you who haven't had the pleasure of racing through the Snake Pit, don't sweat it. I raced it on a 4" travel FS one year after I lost 4 out of 6 rotor bolts on the front wheel of my GT DHi during my last practice run.

My time was actually faster because of the pedaling sections. Plenty of pedaling needed on this course. Just pick a straight line through the Pit and be prepared to pucker. The difficult part of the Pit is the sharp left handed exit. It sends you down a rutted crack between two boulders to an immediate right hand turn. Keep your butt back off the saddle, look ahead, and brake before you enter the crack.

It's kind of funny reading the posts concerned about swapping tires/wheels/pedals/forks...I'm riding the stage race on a 20 year old rigid bike with cantilever brakes. Can you say "holy crap!"?

My understanding so far is that you are allowed up to a 3 pound weight variance total, maximum to minimum for tires between any two or more events. At least thats what was explained to me by Posthole, since you must race the same bike in all events, only tires and tubes are allowed to be changed.

I'm wondering what rim can run a 2.1 xc type tire as well as a 2.5 downhill tire, without the 2.5 squirming all over the place on a skinny rim?

I'm sure it will be straightened out by the time we weigh you in for the second event you compete in.

As for the racing, seems to me that you'd have to step up to the higher category. I think the rules say something like you can always race in a higher category, but they frown on sandbagging.

If not, I'll gladly race beginner this weekend!

    Oh no you don't!

We are bringing both ez-ups plus the awning /add-a-room and plenty of beer , so if it becomes too sloppy to ride, well then you'll just have to sit and get drunk with everyone (I mean me)
