29er Tire Combos/Recommendations

I have been running Kenda Klaws on my Overdrive for the past year because I got a great deal on them from Jenson (less than $30 for the pair shipped). They worked great for me and even if I went through a set every couple of months the price was right.

The Prowlers it came with were good, but I was spinning out more often than I should have been. Also could have been that I was just getting back into riding and finding my positioning again, but the Klaws don't spin out like the Prowlers seemed to.

I recently got a set of Maxxis Igniters from dubjay (Thanks again!) and love them. My experience is limited to these 3 tires sets so far.

YMMV

Rampage vs. Nevegal

I see a lot of replies favoring the Rampages over Nevegals. To my untrained eyes, and having only limited access to $40+ a pop tires, both tires look the same to me.

Anymore to this, besides the thread pattern?

Here's my deets!!....
FS 29er Rampage 2.35/front.... Maxxis Iggi 2.1/rear

HT TI 29er Racing Ralph 2.25 / front...Maxxis Aspen 2.1 /rear

Best performer FS rolls great hooks up..fab!!

Been running tubeless Geax Saguaros front and rear for the last few months on my rigid SS.

I've been really impressed with them; found a real increase in both traction while hammering, and grip while turning. Sealed up nice and easy too. And I've been beating the crap out of them...rode 'em in Sedona, Kernville, Kernville again, and all over down here.

I have Geax Segauro 2.2 front and Maxxis Apsen 2.1 rear on FSR 29er. Geax Segauro 2.2 front and Karma 1.9 rear on my XTC1 29er. I run both bikes tubeless. The Aspens came stock on my XTC but I didn't like it on the front. Works good on the rear and it is very light. I prefer Kenda Karma's on the rear for my hardtail because of the 1.9 width and they very light.

I run the Aspens and really like them, ive ran the WTB prowler and was good but to much rolling resistance for my taste but overall good bite
I also tried Kenda Nevegal and my bike felt instantly heavier when rolling, good bite but sluggish

I've been running a Schwalbe Nobby Nic 2.25 up front with a Conti Race King 2.25 rear.

Have about 1000 miles on this combo over the last couple of months riding Noble, Hurkey, Backbone, Big Bear, San Juan, etc... with no complaints.

I was running a Rocket Ron on the rear but found the side knobs a little soft which led to them feeling like they were rolling on off-camber hard pack. The Race Kings are a little heavier but roll fast and have a nice round profile that grips well as you lean over.

The Nobby Nic up front has been great. A little expensive but it's a front tire so it should last a little longer.

No flats on either tire.

Currently I'm running these set up.....Panaracer Rampage 29 x 2.35" Front & Geax Saguaro 29 x 2.2" Rear. These are working for me personally to my riding ability. I got better cornering descending through switchbacks. The rear roll very fast no hook up i ran lower tire pressure just above 30psi for my weight.

Updated Tire 29er Reviews

Been a while since I have posted up any reviews on this thread.

Please note I run tubes in all my tires, so I have no idea how any of these work tubeless.

Bikes: SC Tallboy & Salsa El Mariachi

Ride: Oaks, Whiting, STT, Blackstar, El Moro, Main Divide.....

Maxxis Aspen 2.1 : Fast and light. Have run it front and rear. Has way more grip on the front than it looks like it should. On the back it has handled both the singlespeed and geared bike. Have ridden them in a variety of conditions.....works well in most. Doesn't like gravel......but didn't expect it to. Kinda narrow for a 2.1 even when mounted to the Velocity Blunt. Sidewalls are pretty thin. Definately one of my favorites.

Maxxis Ardent 2.25 : Pretty fast and not too heavy. Have run it front and rear. Pretty grippy tire. A little bit of give when leaning the tire....getting from the center tread accross the big openness to the side knobs. Great front tire. Wasn't as impressed with it on the rear. Ran it on the rear in Palm Canyon and Sedona, and it seemed like it slipped a little too often. On the front, it likes everything. Again, seems a little narrow for a 2.25, mounted on the Blunts.

Maxxis Ardent 2.4 : Pretty fast and the weight is acceptable (880g) for a tire of this size. Like the 2.25 there is a little give in the transition. I have only run this up front. The tire fits my Reba Team fine, but has a tendancy of picking up rocks and knocking them against the arch. Lots of volume on this tire. Looks ginormous on the Blunts. Tough sidewalls. This is my go-to tire for rides like Joplin, Palm Canyon, Sedona.

Geax AKA 2.2 : Looked an interesting tread pattern....an alternative to the Ikon, which was not available at the time. Very fast tire. Very thick sidewalls....at a cost....weight....about 725g. Again, run both front and rear. Prefer them on the rear. They squirm a little on the front when you really lean them. This is normal for a tire that has such tall and small edge knobs....I just don't like the feeling. On the rear, they hook up great. Been on the singlespeed and geared bike. Hooks up well in a variety of conditions....excluding gravel.....even mud wasn't a problem. Ran this tire the longest on the singlespeed without swapping it out. Really liked it. Disappointed that they wear out way too quick. Fortunately, I ordered 2, so I am good to go. Pretty average width on the Blunt....not too big, not too small....just right.

Geax Seguaro 2.2 : Another, looked interesting, so wanted to try it out. Have run it on the rear of the singlespeed only. Again, the sidewalls seem pretty thick, and the weight penalty for that is another +700g tire. Tire has an arrow direction....Fast or Traction. I tend to run it in the fast direction. This seems to be the best combination of climbing grip and braking bite. In the Traction direction, I found that there was a ton of climbing grip.....but seemed like the braking bite was missing.....kept breaking loose....not very confidence inspiring. Ridden this at the Oaks, El Moro, Whiting and the Luge. Seems to be a good tire for all of these. Have no intention of running on the front.....seems like a rear tire tread pattern for me. Again, just right sizing on the Blunts.

WTB Stout 2.3 : This is a beast of a tire. Thick sidewalls.......heavy 950g. Soft rubber compound. Have only run this on the front. This tire just plain hooks up. Have not found a condtion that I have had trouble with while riding this tire. Disappointed that it was discontinued...good thing I have a spare. Rocks, sand, hardpack, loose over hardpack, gravel, mud.....takes it all in stride without complaint. Seems a bit bigger than the 2.3 size on the Blunt, but don't have the same problems with rocks on the Reba arch like I do with the Ardent 2.4. Probably one of my two favorite all time tires.

WTB Prowler SL 2.1 : Nice rolling tire. Kinda heavy for the size....700g. Have run front and rear.....don't recomend for the rear. Long skinny tread block seem to squirm around quite a bit when leaning into turns. On the front, they are average. Predictable, but not earth shattering. Have a very round profile, even on the Blunts. They work, but they are just kinda in the middle....wouldn't buy another one. Definately better options out there.

WTB Vulpine 2.1 : Super fast tire......but it should be.....with no tread on it. Heavy for a semi-slick....700g. Have run this only as a rear on both singlespeed and geared bike. For being a slick, it has a ton of traction......as long as you stay out of the deep sand, mud, gravel and rocks. Hardpack and loose over hardpack, it is a great tire.....even on the singlespeed. Like to run this on rear of the singlespeed for places like Blackstar or the Luge. Still gets regular rotation in my tire pile.

WTB Nano 2.1 : Very fast tire......very light tire 550g....tons of traction. Have run this front and rear. Prefered as rear tire. Run it on both singlespeed and geared bike. Sidewalls are a little thin, but have seen worse. This tire hooks up in 90% of the conditions I have thrown at it.....including wet soupy mud. Doesn't like gravel....think 3rd B at the Oaks.....but more so on the singlespeed. On the geared bike, not a problem. This has to be the other 1 of 2 of my favorites. Always have one available. A little narrow on the Blunts, would love to see a 2.25.

Panaracer Rampage 2.35 : I like this tire.....as a matter of fact, it's on the front of my singlespeed right now. It gets a bad rap for being a slow tire. I have not found this to be the case....at least not on the front. I have not yet run it on the rear. This is a clone of the Nevegal, a favorite 26" tire of mine. Hooks up well in all conditions. Corners well and is predictable. A little small for a 2.35 on the Blunt, but still a nice footprint. Very respectable weight for the size.....750g. Seems to last for ever. Very nice tires.

I run a 29x2.1 Kenda Small Block 8 in the rear. I had a Small Block 8 in the front too. I really liked how fast it rolled with SB8's front and back but it just didn't have enough bite to it so I switched it out for a 29x2.25 Intense Systems 29er in the front. The Systems 29ers size is more like a 2.1 than a 2.25 but has way more bite than the SB8 2.1 in the front. Trails that the bike felt twitchy and nervous on are now feeling flowy and smooth. I'm not saying that this is the best front tire out there, but a good front tire does make a huge difference in your bikes performance.

I picked up:
2.4 Purgatory 2Bliss "Control" for the front
2.2 Captain 2Bliss "Control" for the rear

This combo came highly recommended from a highly respected person at an LBS. The only concern I have, is that I've read mixed reports of the 2.4 Purg having clearance issues with the Reba SL (which is what I'm going to run).

Right now I am runnig Captain Control 2.2 on the rear; Purgatory Control 2.2 on the front. Depending on consitions/trail I will go with captian 2.2 front and Captain 2.0 rear. I am very happy with these tires. I am tubeless and the Control is a must because the casing is more durable, the S-Works is for people who get free tires.

I've tried the Rampage 2.35, Ikon EXO 2.2, S-Works Captain 2.2 (2Bliss) and 2.0, Small Block Eight DTC 2.1, and Panaracer CG XC 2.25.

I ride super dry, dusty, hardpack, often with sandy pockets and sandy loose turns. Rocks, but not roots and very rare mud. Mostly decomposed granite. Examples: southridge, sycamore, box springs, San juan (top 2/3 from cocktail to bottom/oaks).

Overall, I like the Ikons the most. I wouldn't hesistate to recommend the Panaracer CG XC though. Those tires are surprisingly high quality; I was really impressed by them before even installing them. I might get another instead of the Ikon (when my Ikons wear out), since they are slightly more affordable and have great all-around performance at a penalty of speed and weight.

Price: Rampage (35), SB8 (35), CG XC (42), Ikon (53), S-Works Capt...
Speed: Ikon 10/10, SB8 8/10, Captain 7/10, CG XC 7/10, Rampage 5/10... 1/10 would be (26" mud tire)
Dry traction: Ikon wins, followed close by CG XC and then SB8. SB8 grips hard on granite, more so than any other tire. Rampage and Captains don't feel up to par set by the others. Micro Knobs gripping more than widely spaced big knobbies going against preconceptions? My opinion was certainly changed.
Moist traction: Captain, by far. CG XC, Ikon, Rampage comparable. SB8 starts to feel sketchy
Wet: Not sure, but I know SB8 totally fails here. Especially on rock, even up a slight grade, they just don't grip.
Off camber: CG XC by far. Rampage is okay too. All the other suck. Captains notably suck the most here.
Braking: Rampage and CG XC stop really well. Ikons skid easily, but are very predictable. SB8s skid a bit too much. Captains brake ok, but get really sketchy and out of control if you are on the verge of skidding.
Cornering: CG XC gives me the most confidence, though the Captains impress me more with their ability carve really, in its element (moist soil). Rampage feels really stable and can be pushed. Ikons, I am light on (I know their limit well). SB8s, I don't trust.
Deep loose sand: Captains and CG XC seem to track straighter with more control through the deep sand, maintaining more momentum. Ikons and SB8s are a bit too sketchy and squirm/fish tail through. Rampages are stable, but gets bogged down and if you stall out, you cannot get it started back up again.
Flats: I'd assume the CG XC holds up the best, but I've only run it tubeless. I've flatted all the others multiple times, though mostly punctures with Ikons and more pinches with the SB8 and Rampage. Captains pinch flatted far too often, followed by SB8 for most frequent flats.
Tubeless: CG XC, despite not being tubeless, fits really tight on my Flows and seems to hold up better to lower pressure; no burps and no lost seals. Ikons convert very well too on Flows; lost one seal on my rear tire when I left the bike in the car (rear tire was leaning against something). Lost my tubeless seal on SB8 on a conversion (reg rims w/Stan's rubber rim strip; lost it doing a drop) and couldn't convert the rear. Same experience with the Rampage. Could not convert the captains on regular rims using Stan's rubber strip. My rims were likely more to blame. Edge rims don't have bead shelves (no success with any tire on them) and the vuelta rims had issues with tires.
Life/Durability: Ikons have 1+k miles over 7 months and still about 50%, even the rear (though my XC FS bike has closer to 50/50 weight dist as opposed to my AM bike's 35F/65R distro), without any cuts, and lots of scuffs on sidewall. The SB8 I used on my rear got a small sidewall cut but looks to have 80% life with 600+ miles (can't run it tubeless now without a tire patch). Others look hardly used with at least 70% life with 200-500 miles. No dreaded cuts with the Captains, thankfully; they look like they would shred easily.

Summary: Ikons for pure speed and all around performance. CG XC for more all around traction at cost of speed and weight. Captains 2Bliss if you ride more moist soil and not the typical super dry desert stuff that I ride. The others just seem average and have too many compromises and not a lot that they excel at; expected, since they are the cheapest out of the tires; lessen learned is that expensive rubber actually does perform a lot better and I won't really skimp on tires anymore after getting a feel for quality rubber (they are a huge contact point, which wisdom says not to skimp on). Panaracer signature line (Made in Japan; doesn't include Rampage) definitely is the highest quality-made tire line that I ever handled; their tread patterns seem rather odd, but work.

Think I might swap over to the Mutano or CG AM on my AM bike, after getting a feel for micro knobs and "rail" type treads instead of sticking with High Roller/Nevegal/Bronson tread types.

Right now I am runnig Captain Control 2.2 on the rear; Purgatory Control 2.2 on the front. Depending on consitions/trail I will go with captian 2.2 front and Captain 2.0 rear. I am very happy with these tires. I am tubeless and the Control is a must because the casing is more durable, the S-Works is for people who get free tires.

im using this exact combo and have really been happy with it.

2.2 Purgatory up front (2bliss, Control)
2.2 Captain on the rear (2bliss, Control)

trails include aliso, el moro, lcwp, santiago oaks, whiting, stt, luge.

these have a pretty large volume for a 2.2 and have excellent grip. i dont like using the cliché of saying these are predictable, or unpredictable. however, i will say they haven't slid out on me when leaning into turns. the captain has excellent bite when climbing the steep stuff, whether its on dry dirt, or rocks with a light dusting of dirt.

Had to take the Kenda Slant 6 off of the rear of my single speed after only 5 rides. This would be a great, fast-rolling tire for a geared bike, but it does not have the grip in the rear that I need on the SS. The shale leading up to Modjeska and the shale leading up to Sandstone peak in the Santa Monicas showed me the tire's weaknesses for a SS.

If you have a geared 29er, I'd highly recommend this tire. Heck, I'd even sell it to ya for cheap!

Back to the 2.2 Captain up front and the 2.0 Captain in the rear. Best combo I've found for my XC/FS/SS MilkMoney.
