...you might as well do it for a good cause. just got this email. please think about donating; and if you're in the HB or long beach area i'll go with you (free snacks and drinks):

July is here, and the heat is on to find enough blood donors this summer. You may be familiar with the challenges we face:
High schools and colleges are on break, so there are fewer campus blood drives
    People are on summer vacations
Summer routines are often more relaxed
These factors make it harder to maintain an adequate supply of blood during the summer. In past years, shortages were so severe that some patient procedures had to be postponed.
However, we can - and must - prevent shortages. Together, we can provide enough blood for hospital patients in the coming months.
You can ensure that patients receive blood by donating frequently this summer. You can give blood every 56 days. Please take a moment to find a convenient blood drive near you, and schedule your appointment now.
It's one hour of your summer. It's a lifetime for the person you help.
Please help today – call 1-800-RED-CROSS (800-733-2767 Press 1 for English, then 4 for blood donations) or visit RedCrossBlood.org to schedule an appointment to donate.

^^ i think you're good. from the red cross site:

    Tattoo

Wait 12 months after a tattoo if the tattoo was applied in a state that does not regulate tattoo facilities. This requirement is related to concerns about hepatitis.

Acceptable if the tattoo was applied by a state-regulated entity using sterile needles and ink that is not reused. There are 32 states that currently regulate tattoo facilities. You should discuss your particular situation with the health historian at the time of donation.

I give blood all the time. Red Cross called me yesterday but they said I'm deferred for a year after having surgery.
I'll have to check further cuz that seems odd.

I know there are more than few legal/religious/moral/practical reasons why they don't, but they should require folks to donate blood every time one has to renew their drivers license.
