Looking for a lighter wheelset for my single speed. And I have no idea what is out there. I just wanted some opinions, I havent been singlespeeding that long, so give me the basics. I have a trek 69er 3x9 converted over. Now it has the stock race disc wheels. I was thinking of going to the x lite ones that come on the ss 69er stock. What do you think?

    Thanks in advance.

I think the stock bonty wheels (as well as the aftermarket) are going to leave you less than impressed. I would recommend looking for a good set of hubs laced by hand to some nice wheels. I personally like my dt swiss and hope hubs...although that is just opinion. Stans makes nice rims if wanting to try tubeless.

    Good luck and have fun.

    Cheers,
    Andy

The hoops themselves are fine, but you will find the hubs to be less than desirable

ive got bontrager hubs/wheels on my ss and I am surprised they have held up to the abuse i give them granted I am pretty smooth but I am HEAVY (265). These are the OEM hubs on the GF Rig.

I have hopes on my geared bike and other then the cool anodize im not a fan. The mill work gets grooved from the cassette, they are noisy and I had to replace bearings after only a couple hundred miles.

Next wheels I build will be DT swiss hubs with stans rims...nice and quiet.

even my 990's smallest 3 gears mar the freebody.

Next go-round i'll order the stainless steel freehub body (same cost)

I thought that up to '08 bonty race x lite hubs were DT's. I thought they were just re-stickered 240's. I could be wrong though.... The freehub internals looks like star ratchet to me. I've never had an issue with the higher end bonty's.

I've got the rootbeer 69'er and love the set up so far.... time will tell though.

DT Swiss 240s hubs have an aluminum carrier. Any aluminum carrier will gouge when the gears on the cassette are loose and not spreading the load over a larger surface area of the hub carrier. Contact DT Swiss and ask for a SS carrier, like that which comes on a 340 or a 440 Freeride.

I’ve had two custom wheel sets built by Mike at Coates. Either Mike or Jack can offer excellent advice and build the perfect wheel set for you. I’m also very pleased with DT 240’s road and mountain.
