2 seconds is slow. Cold Steel makes with a thumb plate that opens the blade as fast as you pull the knife out of your pocket. Rajah, AK47, or Spartan series. Lightest one with that feature is 2.9 oz.

I do a lot of solo sessions at night and have given this subject a lot of thought. I keep my phone easily assessable in a Nite Ize case (my GPS, wife line and email checks). Inspired by a buddy, I took one of those inexpensive neck knives and sheath it in my phone case. I do realize there's a small chance that it will work or I'll get stabbed while trying to defend myself, but it whips out easily and gives me some piece of mind.

Japanese cold steel, 3.5" and light. Don't wear this around neck anymore - crashed and got poked good. Attach it to frame pack now.

that scares me a bit. that thing falls in a crash, you might stick yourself with it.

i have a gerber guardian back up. it has a tension adjustable locking sheath. pulls easy and very secure.

what are the chances of surviving a lion attack? slim. but guranteed, its at least 100% better with a knife than without :)

    That was awesome.

I do carry a pocket knife. While it's easy to say I would easily use it say if a mountain lion attacked me, I think in the heat of moment I would freeze up. Especially with cats being so sneaky.

The knife is in the hard plastic sheath and it's in the case firm enough so just the knife pulls.

I've been carrying this Kershaw Anphibian in my pack on all moto, bike and hike days since 92'. It always made me feel that much safer. I have to laugh at myself after watching this video and remembering those solo night Blackstar big cat thoughts that always creep up in my mind when I go it alone. I always plan my attack and have a plan to grab the knife but after this video, I realize I'd be doomed if it ever did happen. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1349750264.691498.jpg

Hard plastic sheaths can do some damage if you fall the wrong way on it. Moved around in my shirt as I went down and got me good.

Where and how do you carry that, that's easily accessible? I've been thinking about night Santa Anna Mountain trips. Would love to hit the peak.

Screw the blades and the sheaths. Gotta tape a mini bar to your hands like Liam Neeson in the Grey.

You don't need a knife, you just need to ride with slower riders.

I don't carry anything and am not worried about it. I feel perfectly safe out on the trails.
