So I thought that this would be a good poll after my early morning ride in Aliso Woods. I got out there about 7:15am and came across a few riders on the way into the park, but more coming in as I was going out. I don't know if it's the full moon or what, but people this morning seemed to be really unfriendly and genuinely unhappy to be alive and riding their bikes.

Personally, I try to say hello to all trail users that I come across and many look at me like I have just insulted them by doing so. :?:

That really bothers me when other riders are unfriendly. I try and atleast nod, or give a quick "HI!", to other riders. Riding my bike is my entertainment/recreation.

I'm always happy when I'm riding or running. If I wasn't, then why the hell would I do it in the first place?

I've noticed that when I'm jogging in El Moro, I don't get many MTBer's making eye contact and giving me a courtesy nod. That always bugs me. Why can't you be friendly just because I'm not doing the same hobby as you? Put me on my bike and they'll notice me.

I think people who aren't happy/friendly while biking or jogging are people who suck at it.

usually, the only time I don't acknowledge someone is:

    1) if I'm maxed out needing every bit of oxygen can take in
    2) if at a glance they look like total douches

I get that while trail running too. Those mountain bikers! They're real runner-haters ;).

Yeah, I try to say hi or acknowledge with the simple nod (due to being out of breath and the arms are stuck to the handlebars) to everyone I come across on the trails.

We're all out there to enjoy what nature has to offer and coming across disgruntled trail users puts a damper on the whole experience...

This is Southern California. People are not always friendly. Get over it.

    douche

If I see two guys wearing matching jerseys and lycra 99% of the time they are douche bags.

The nicest BY FAR are the n00bies. Long live the n00bie!!!!!!!!!!

Also the folks in OC are much nicer than the bitter LA crowd (for Burner);)

I hardly ever say hello on the climbs because I'm dying, out of breath and asking myself....WTF, How is that fat ass who's 15 years older than me with a beer belly, on a downhill bike beating me uphill? I get pissed, hop out of the saddle then say f-that, and hit the cruz button.

    KRZ

Then I figure out...that fat ass wasn't up until 3 last night and riding with a hangover at 9am

i find it easy to say 'hi' as im climbing, it flows naturally while huffing/puffing on a climb.

like others have said, don't let one dull crayon ruin the entire box.

The First two options are normally my mood , but on a long climb and I am dying number 4 can be my mood quite easily.

Great exercise and another great day!!
Any day I can ride is a great day!! Dang! I should have crawled outta bed early and made it there to join you! It was my intention.. But, I slept in and did another solo ride..
I, too ran into a few unfriendly people.. I think to myself, "What the heck!" I usually say Hi or wave my hand to other trail users.. and usually get it back, but this morning, people weren't having it! Not to mention dogs in the trail without a leash! What's up with that?
I did get a freaky hello from a Rattle Snake on the little climb on Rock IT! Going left,, almost cleaned it, put my foot down right next to it! YIKES! It rattled then We both went our own way!! I did see Gene on my way out!! I even got a hug and a hello from him!!
    Happy Trails...

Dude-- i TOTALLY hear you. hikers, bikers, equestrians-- i always make it a point (if possible) to make eye contact and say hi or at least a friendly smile and nod. What is totally surprising is that I've found that it's my fellow dirt riders who are some of the least responsive-- what gives? :-k

I usually give a nod to mtn bikers, and I'll try to say a nice "good morning" to hikers along the way. I do the extra bit for hikers to try and give all us mtb-ers a good name! :)

I also find that people in the San Gabriels are much more likely to acknowledge you than those found on the OC trails. Anyone else notice this, or is it just me? :?: (P.S. I lived in Irvine for 12 years, so I know the OC well ;))

I always try to give a quick hi or at least a wave of the hand. I try to let everyone know I'm coming up behind so I don't spook them. Doesn't take all that much to be nice.

general mood? calm and concentrated. here's a little mantra that i use that seems to help, feel free to borrow it:

    1. on the inhale- pato

    2. on the exhale- vendetta

    3. repeat ad infinitum
