Cool, thanks. Now, in addition to catching greif about the new bike, I'm going to add to it with a new pair of shoes :)

Allison hit it right on: the 510 Impact shoes are a must. For what it's worth, I tried the Crank Bros 50/50's and hated them so much I gave them away. I could not in good conscience, sell them to somebody. No grip whatsoever!!

Unless your hucking 10 foot boulders, I'd go clipless dude. I know Pacman digs platforms for XC, but I coudn't imagine not having upstroke potential on most of my rides.

True dat... but, for DH get platforms.

    For XC get clipless.

BTW, I saw Dougie wearing Specialized clipless shoes in the Fruita pic?? Come'on bud, you KNOW you want to go back!

Actually, I used to wear those with my platforms before I found the blessed magnificance of 510's. I just didn't remove the flap that covers the cleat-install-part-thingy.

Here's the deal on my issue with clipless: I never made friends with being able to clip out in time after 4 months of trying to get used to it. I hated the SPD pedals I had and the fact that I could only unclip by swinging my heal out, so the crap pedals are partly to blame, I know.

And lastly, I saw a show on TV called "The Science of Pedal Power" and they stated that on average, on your upstroke, you can only generate 13-18% of the power that you can on your downstroke, and that was only if you did it perfectly (they were illustrating why pro's use them--saying how even 13-18% means a lot over the course of a race). So I didn't see the point in going back. Plus, with the 510's, my feet NEVER slip, so I don't need to clip-in for stability.

If someone could point me to a clipless pedal where clipping out is SUPER EASY then I may go back.

I'd suggest just getting regular egg beaters (they're easier since there is no surrounding plastic, the only issue is if you miss on the first try then there's not a lot to hold your foot on) and putting them on the BEGINNER setting. Make sure you actually install them on EASIER instead of the normal way.

    http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/PE410A01-Crankbrothers+Egg+Beater+Mxr+Pedal+06.aspx

If you hate 'em, you're only out $50 and you can probably sell them on here for $25-$30.

Everyone says that you can turn down Shimano's, etc etc.. blah blah... Just try 'em. I'd offer to let you try a pair of mine, which I guess you can with the Candy's if you're interested, but the only set of regular Eggbeater's I have are Double Ti or something, and even Justin doesn't ride 'em cause of weight limit. He has single Ti, I believe.

I actually ride with CB's Candy's right now and really like them (Cleat screws are another issue, but then I guess it's up to me to tighten them :)). The plan was to get some flats on the new bike, get used to the new bike, and then switch them over to the hard tail that I use to pull the kids in the bike trailer, etc. so I don't always have to wear the MTB shoes.

I've gotten really used to the clipless and prefer them (sorry Doug), but I was looking for an alternative to have around. Thanks for all of the good suggestions.

Wasn't sure if anyone had seen this yet? A little bummed I didn't wait, but still looking forward to the new bike.

Makes you kinda want to come back to the 26" scene, doesn't it??:bang:

Interesting to see they did away with the manipulated top tube knuckle shock junction.

Is that a brace between the seat stays? Kind of looks like fins sticking down, but the two stays appear to be connected.

Not sure if this is still an open issue but next time we ride I can let you use the A-Frames that Doug is talking about. I'm using my ATAC's on my Heckler for now. Then you can decide if you like scars or not; I mean platforms.

Thanks. I think I'm going to put the Candy's on the 575 and then put some cheap platforms on the old bike so I can ride it around in regular shoes if need be.

Sweet. I was going to go with the Candy's if I didn't like my ATAC's but so far they have worked for me. I hope those Candy's workout right for you.
